there is no shame in missing. im pretty sure we have all missed atleast one animal in our times. i missed a deer at 30 yards with my bow last season so it happens. Atleast he has a good attitude. that will get him far, especially with hunting when you come home empty handed more times than not.

2 tacomas, where did you go trout fishing up in NOVA? i live in manassas and was under the impression that the closest stream was like 2 or 3 hours away

No shame in missing at all. Thats great he had a good attitude about missing nothing worse than beating yourself up about missing. Sounds like you two had a great father son hunt. I will take some pictures of the beards, we cleaned them up on the mountain. I will also try to take a picture of the pic on my phone of me holding the two birds. Forgot the camera at home.

I live in Northern Va but our hunting camp is up in the Shenandoah Valley. I do have access to some land in Haymarket, but I do the majority of my hunting (and trout fishing) about 2 hours West up in the mountains of the Shenandoah Valley...I love the western part of our state.

Nice toms though, my buddy just called and he just layed the smack down on a tom with a 12'' beard and a 10'' beard lucky bastard god a double bearder.

    2T,

I always heard that the best thing to come from Virginia was West Virginia!! Sorry, couldn't resist. Our best trout fishing is the eastern part of the state.

got out again this morning and got even closer to killing me a turkey. man im getting the itch again. called him in to about 40 yards but he spotted me taking my safety off so took the shot. in hindsight i probably shouldnt have seeing as i only have a modified choke in this gun right now. hopefully this weekend i will get a full or superfull. shot right as he turned tail and ran and filled his butt with bebes. he took off flying so i think he is still alive, just very sore. i looked for blood for about half an hour and couldnt find any. i hope he is still alive to be shot again another day. at the very least he is gonna make some coyote or coon very happy tonight

Opening Day produced lots of gobbles on roost, but low action on the ground.

Second Day brought some success. Early too! 6:30am

He came in drumming and spitting. Only gobbled twice on roost.

    9 1/2" beard, 7/8" spurs.

Working on filling my seconds tag now. I called for some friends later in the week. Called in some jakes and smaller birds with limited shot opportunities. Headed out in the am with a friend on his first hunt, should be good fun!

Due to rain and wind yesterday, my 10 year old daughter and I slept in and made an afternoon hunt on a farm we frequent after the rain cleared.

She called off and on and after an hour or so she got an old boss hog to sound off in the woods. He finally came in the field and he stalled about 100 yards from our blind.

I had her get ready and I had to lure the 'ol smart Tom in with lots of purrs. At one point, he was going to leave the field and I had to get loud with the purrs.

We had a hen, jake, and B-mobile full strut decoys in a horseshoe pattern 20 yards from the blind in the middle of a 50 acre mowed field.
After putting on a 40 minute strutting show getting to the decoys, he commenced to flogging B-mobile.....twice! I would have put the bird down when he was under 30 yards, but with my daughter, we had to be very cautious and slow and she was having a hard time getting comfortable to get a shot.

Once she was lined up, I turned her loose with a clear shot and she laid the smack down on an awesome bird. It was the absolute most exciting hunt I have ever been on!!! Not only because it was my 10 year old daughters first deer, but the show that 'ol Tom put on thumping that decoy was a rush!!

He weighed 20 lbs. 10 1/2" beard, and a whopping 28mm spurs. I myself have only taken one bird older with longer spurs than that.....on to some pics................

now time to get her twin brother on a bird again!!

hoosiertaco- Congrats!! The first Turkey is always the most memorable...my 1st Turkey is the reason I got so into hunting!!

I ended up staying home yesterday b/c of the rain, in VA we can only hunt until noon for the 1st part of the season but can hunt all day the last 2 weeks of the season. I have this Friday off so I am going to hit the mountains again....hopefully the weather will cooperate and I can get two days of good bird chasing in :)
