Well Melba Toast was from an era where they still had a centered steering wheel, so the stripes were symmetrical.

Umm... no? It's so your right hand can be on the wheel, so the wheel is offset to your right so your arm is just straight out. This leaves your left arm free to wave out the window and do all sorts of stupid shit. The steering wheel is centered in front of your right shoulder for comfortable one handed driving. When was the last time you saw a redneck with his hands at 10 and 2 on the wheel?
