I saw somewhere that the size of the piping in an exhaust system greatly effects the performance. I found a 3 inch and 4 inch exhaust system. Wondering the people's opinion on which one I should get.Screenshot_20180119-183640.jpg Screenshot_20180119-183405.jpg

And I’m curious which one of these will sound like a growl and not like a Honda Civic with a coffee can on it. Anyone have any experience with either of these?

OP, It does, but my understanding (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) is that you're missing a few details...
    • Neither of these exhausts are 4", that's just the tip diameter (that's what she said) for the Borla. The pipe diameter is 2.5".
    • Exhaust is only part of the equation, you would need to upgrade the intake which is still only another part of the equation because...
    • The engine will take advantage of neither without a proper tune. The ECU will just account for the changes.
    • Most "breathing" improvements include the headers, which are integrated into our engine blocks (so pretty much no easy way to "fix" that).
    • The catalytic converters are another big choke point. You're only going to do so much with those still attached. URD makes exhaust to do just that, but they also seem to have some quality control issues.
Lastly, the larger pipes help at wide open throttle, but can have negative affects in lower RPM ranges, which is the last thing the 3.5l needs.

The OEM exhaust system is fine. I've seen many after market installers compliment how well the plumming is on this truck.

Yeah a lot of people are telling me to keep it stock for now. Think I'll just do that and put my money into suspension upgrades. A new exhaust for me isn't really that necessary, thanks for the info.

So lets talk about real upgrades. What's the best suspension out there?

all true, and with small displacement motors like ours the consistent backpressure in the exhaust is part of the engineering work designed into the system. 2.5" keeps that pressure.

go to a 3.0" full system and watch the torque of the motor, what there is, drop out its ass as fast as i wrote that.

go to any performance car forum, STi, Mz3, GTi, etc, and you'll see tons of noobs taking their 2.5's to higher diameter from the motor back or even CBE, and they come back in a day with "where'd all my low end and throttle response go?". it got lost when you lose backpressure... that's where your throttle response and low end originate.

small motor, keep your 2.5" diameter unless you're going FI.

I am extremely satisfied with my 2.5" Gibson stainless catback 618814 together with a K&N cai. All together costs were $436 from autoanything and both were easy installs. Nice throaty sound and moderate performance gains. Was not expecting massive hp gains but a noticeable torque increase with much better throttle response. Nothing tinny about the sound. So happy I did not spend the $550 on the planned TRD exhaust.

Definitely agree with some of what u mentioned, but I have had 2 different Evolutions and the exhaust upgrade was a huge improvement. I can’t speak for STI’s golfs etc, but I promise it def made a huge diff in mine. I had a 2nd gen Taco before my 3rd gen and other than better sound, I felt I gained nothing. I actually regretted it since it made me less stealthy when going to my hunting spot.

For the OP, unless u r crazy about a different sound just save your money for mods that will give u more fun in your truck.

Honestly the exhaust is a cool mod, but not really functional for the money. I agree with u, use the Tacoma for fun stuff! Suspension will give u many options to go wheeling. Larger tires, better ground clearance, etc. and it will get u up higher in case zombies attack. Lol JK I’ve heard some good stuff about the King for sure. It’s your truck but I think u will have more fun and usability with the lift.
