I'm not spending huge money for line. I cast mine in the back yard for fun and practice. I would be afraid to do that if I spent close to a $100 for fly line.

There is no way I could tell the difference between $20 and $100 line. To me, it is more important just to go fishing.

I've gone fly fishing 5 times since November and only hooked 2 fish and landed none. It means nothing to me. I got to go fishing. I'm way happy!

    Sounds about right

Most fish u catch will be inside 15 yards

The backing handles the fish that try to run away with your line :)

    Only....lol.

Yes.. that's normal. You'll never really need that much line.

then the backing adds what you need then...is that a braided line or something else?

The backing serves two purposes. 1. It adds diameter to your spool so you retrieve more line as you reel in. 2. In the event you catch a fish big & strong enough to take out 100' of your fly line...it gives you extra line.

Fly line can develop memory, so with the backing you don't get small coils. It's good to stretch your fly line periodically in the sun.

Dacron is common.100yds of 30lb would be all you need.

A fly shop will help you with all of this.

If you buy your line & backing there...they'll be glad to answer all your questions for nothing.

When it's all spooled up it'll look something like these. These are 7/8 reels with 100yds of 30lb Dacron baking & fly line. The backing is white. You can get orange & yellow, but I've heard those colors can run if they get wet. You want to leave some room on the reel as fly reels don't self wind/level the line. With big fish you may have to use your finger to try and keep it fairly even, otherwise it can all bunch up on one side.

It pays dividends to spend some time and money in your local fly shop. I’m not talking big box stores like sportsman’s warehouse here lol.

Yep^ I learned the knots that are commonly used from my local shop... At least I learned the names so I could look them up and practice.

Oddly enough, the old timer at my Cabelas wanted to talk my ear off. Here in the Saginaw bay area, fly fishing is not that common. Because of that, we can get some screaming deals.

I even got the personal email from the guy with a promise to get a heads up on clearance items.

I'm very impressed with my Cabelas fly fishing section. I often think the head office dropped the ball when it came to laying out the store for this area. There is often dust on the inventory. My gain:)

Yup. You can add tippet material to your leader as you lose a little line from changing flies. Probably not needed for Pike.

If your targeting pike, they make special pike leaders with a bite proof end.
