You'd be surprised how well the truck handles the weight. I DD it year round like that. I commute up to a ski/ summer resort halfway up a mountain as my daily work commute. It turns the 33s pretty nicely.

I also frequently have more in the bed and tow a loaded trailer too.

The difference in performance may well be between your ears too. Until you actually compare 0-60 times and other hard numbers it is hard to say.

I understand the butt dyno isnt the most accurate, but its not between ears, my truck just isnt the same. I took the passenger side OCV filter out to see if it was dirty and it looked brand new. Im gonna put the issue to bed and assume its a combination of the 93 octane fuel with the pre-TSB ECU map.

Why are you guys using high octane gas? What octane does your owners manual say to use? Using higher octane gas than the manufacturer calls for does not increase performance. Repeat it does not increase performance. In fact it can lower performance and reduce gas mileage and of course you pay a lot more for no benefit.
If your truck is designed to burn 87, it will not burn 91 or 93 correctly. Your gas mileage will suffer. The inability of your engine to burn the higher octane gas correctly will cause your engine to produce less power and thus will require more fuel to perform at the same level.
I don’t know what your octane rating is suppose to be per the manufacturer but I’m assuming like mine it calls for 87 octane. If I am wrong let me know.

Here’s the owners manual- "for improved vehicle performance, the use of premium unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended"

It depends on which engine you have. If you have the 2TR-FE then you should be using the 87 octane. If you have the other engine then higher octane can be used. Keep in mind the the Research Octane Number (RON) is different from the Motor Octane Number (MON). MON is the octane rating shown on the pumps in the US. RON is generally in Europe and elsewhere. It gets complex but 87 Octane MON equals about 91 octane RON.
So bottom line 2TR-FE engine 87 Octane should be used, not higher.
1GR-FE engine higher octane can be used but 87 is ok.

Early 2nd gen V6 was able to make 239 hp / 278 lb-ft of torque from 91 or higher octane gas, 12 lb-ft more than on 87 octane. Press material from late 2004 even mentioned 245 hp / 282 lb-ft, but that was with a previous version of the SAE dyno test procedure: https://s3.amazonaws.com/amv-prod-c...oyota-tacoma-double-cab-sr5-4x4-v-6-specs.pdf

Pretty sure the ecu adjusts based on knock or ping detection with lower octane fuel then retards the timing to compensate. If you run the lower octane usually then in practice, outside of a reset/battery disconnect of the ecu and running several tanks of higher octane....I think your timing would remain....slightly retarded. I’ve found that when I run premium for trips over 2 full tanks my mileage is also better by 1.2 mpg.
