I find ride quality is worsened more going from P-metric to LT tires than going from 16" to 18". I rented a JK Wrangler 4-door in "Sahara" trim once with P255/70R18 Bridgestone Dueler AT tires. Ride quality on pavement is better than my current LT265/75R16 Duratracs in load range C. The Wrangler did OK on 3-rated trails (out of 5) in the forests in my area.

Anyway, back to the Ford Ranger. Looks like it uses the same lug pattern as Toyota, and the caliper clearance allows for 16" wheels. Plenty of options for upgrades. :)

Toyota knows that about 5% of its customers drive their Tacomas off road more than once a month. Ford probably has a pretty good idea of this too.

Besides, doesn’t the Taco Limited come with 18s?

I am content that Toyota gave me 16" wheels on the Off Road at least, 15" would be more my liking but the brakes had to fit and I totally get that.
17" and 18" and larger on mid sized trucks are more for show and road and less for other.

Never spent much time looking at the Limited. Too much glamour for my taste.
    Figures, it would have 18".

The styling is ok with me, I like a sleek front end. The turbo is ok with me, I like gobs of lowend torque. I bet it tows nice. Looks like from KenLyns's pics it has a teeny gas tank like the Colorado and the Taco, I absolutely hate that. Even this short wheelbase 4Runner has a 23g fuel tank. However, towing with the turbo I'd probably go farther between fillups since I'd be in lower gears at lower RPM.

Personally one of the best features of aluminum is the resistance to corrosion. Not having the entire body doesnt really provide those benefits.

Body corrosion isn't really an issue nowadays. Even 1st gen Tacos with frames broken in half still have pristine bodies. I just hope the frame's corrosion protection is better than what Ford provides to Thailand and South America...

I respect your opinion, but I’d have to disagree. If I wanted something to just beat to shit and let the elements do there thing to I wouldn’t buy a 35k truck. That’s a lot of money to just not take care of. I see no problem with people keeping their truck in the garage to preserve the paint. It’s an investment, no reason to let your value go down by just not giving a shit.

    But to each their own.

Speak for yourself. I live and work on opposite sides of a causeway over open salt water connected to the North Atlantic on both sides. My vehicles are constantly coated in salt.

It was a dig at people who scoff at 18" wheels....those same people probably garage and baby their truck too. I grew up in the construction biz, none of our equipment was garaged, only time was to work on it. We give a shit and take care of the mechanicals, but I was never really into rubbing on them, they are trucks and should be treated as such. I don't view vehicles as investments either, they are liabilities. Anything you are going to loose money on is a liability to me.

Love all the Toyotas I had over the 26 years I have owned them, but would never pay $35K for new Tacoma. Great little trucks, but not worth $35K for something that can't haul all that much, nor does it get all that great of fuel economy to make up for not being to haul that much, imo. Your opinion may differ.

I'll pay $25K for a SR...ones that go $35K+ is for a bunch of fluff that most people don't need. Toyotas used to great little work horses that you could beat on and they come back for more. The "fluff" crowd has mostly ruined the platform. Very happy to see that the bones of the Ranger hasn't strayed too far from the global platform, unlike the watered down version of the HiLux that Toyota gives us.

Because it isn't going to be aimed at the off road crowd. It is primarily aimed at 25-40 year olds who will use it mostly for commuting and the odd weekend warrior project. Millennials love the mid size truck segment, I suspect it will continue to grow.

I have to agree with your statement about the "fluff" crowd ruining the Tacoma, who the fuck needs heated seats and shit like that, HTFU people.

And I drive in this every winter:

The parking lot at my work is turned white every winter by all the salt the company puts down. 7 years ago, my driver's side door got keyed down to the primer. I brushed some touch-up paint on with a Toyota paint pen and never took it to a body shop. Not a single rust spot on the door today. Toyota's body rust protection is much better than its frames'.

Neither. There was about a 1/4" gap. Not quite #TacoCentipede
