Thanks! Wish I could get a LC79 over here and I wouldn't have to drool over other manufacturers solid axles.......le sigh....

I blame the sedan crowd...pretty much ruining all trucks. The lowly pickup has become the family truckster.

When Toyota veered away from the HiLux to the Tacoma for the US/Canadian market back in the 90's, we started to loose the great little work horse.
Granted the HiLux has gotten a little fluff itself...however the core workhorse is still there. The payload blows the Tacoma away. Can dig through the specs here

The Ranger has the fluff models too, but not getting too far off the global platform has me excited. Specs in here:

In what world does eveyone who owns a truck have to use it exclusively offroad and for construction? The same one where every Corvette owner goes to the track every weekend?

I agree....I like my AC and my wife would love it if my Tacoma had heated seats or dual zone climate control....nothing wrong with some bells or whistles.

If you wanted to haul alot in the bed of the tacoma you could put a big leaf pack on it or airbags. The cushy ride of 600 pound payload capacity helps sell trucks if it rides smoother than a Ford/dodge/Chevy/whatever else somebody might be interested in buying.
And as far as off roading the ranger and it having 18 inch wheels I bet it has those big wheels to fit big brakes to stop better. To me it looks like they didn't plan on jeep people to buy it but people that want a truck but don't want a giant full size. Now the mid size trucks seem like there only slightly smaller than a 20-25 year old full size.

You mean the corvette owners I encounter on the freeway driving 10mph under the speed limit, I guess there are some similarities between them and some truck owners.

There is nothing wrong using a truck for other activities, I use mine for everything, running back and forth to work, camping, offroading, hauling construction supplies...running to go get milk shakes :D ...however the "fluff" crowd has forced the bare bones truck to virtually disappear, driving up the cost for a bunch of stuff some people don't really need. Look at the base model SR...not very bare bones anymore. Heck, can't even get them with a manual trans any longer.

Fluff is popular so it sells, and it kills off practical.

I also miss the bare bones trucks. When I bought my truck they were advertising new 5 lug trucks for 12999. The sticker price on a similar model to mine has really gone up, but it does have allot more fluff.

I run OME HD's. Handles the load better than stock, but I rarely max out the payload since I am worried about bending the frame...it gets awfully flexy when I load it up.

Yeah Midsizes are real close to the old fullsizes, which is a nice size. Hearing the Ranger is close to the 1st gen Tundra, which was about perfect.

My first was an '85 4Runner, had power brakes and steering, and that was about it. Miss rubber floors and vent windows.

Though I will admit power windows and AC is awfully nice...lived without those for years and years when I was younger.

The only fluff I really want is the button on the keys so I can crank it up from inside my house when it's cold out. I like my manual windows and 5 speed. I just wish I could buy a new one with a 2.7, 5 speed, single cab and a 8 foot bed.

I know it’s hard to imagine a transmission that doesn’t hunt gears, but just because a vehicle has 10 gears doesn’t mean, in any way, that it’ll hunt for them. Some manufacturers actually know how to program correctly.

I know some auto transmissions with half as many gears that have been “fixed” and still hunt for gears and perform like shit.

I hope the Ranger is every bit as good as it should be. I know a lot of people in this thread will be proven wrong. Tacoma market share may be vast, but it’s full of guys who get served a warmed up shit sandwich and say THANK YOU.

Mr and Mrs Truck Buyer don’t give fuck all about brand loyalty. The Ranger is a proven, legacy model - and those are all the rage, and is still a large reason why Tacoma’s, 4Runner’s and LCs are sold today. Add every other flagship model from every other manufacturer.

Unless it’s a third gen-esque (read: poor) rollout from Ford, expect significant competition in the usage segment, and plenty of ship jumping.

Unfortunately not...nothing is bare bones anymore. Tacoma does, but you have to buy a package at $35K with a lot of "fluff" to get it.

Would be satisfied if Toyota offered the V6 MT ACLB in SR trim, but they don't. Really hate how Toyota packages their trucks.

Too bad regular cabs are all but dead, speaking of fluff killing off the bare bones trucks.

I always wanted a RCLB diesel MT HiLux. 30 mpg and actually be able to haul stuff in the bed. What I do now is to augment my truck with a 5X8' trailer, to get that "fullsize truck bed" with out having to own a fullsize truck. Towing capacity is more than most 3/4 ton truck's payload.

^The Hilux diesel would have much lower payload and towing capacity if subject to North American standards. Handling tests are done with vehicle loaded to GVWR. Towing is all acceleration performance-based: http://fifthwheelst.com/SAE-J2807-Tow-Tests.html
They are in good shape. What's special about that area? Road grime if you don't have flaps?
