I wouldn't have touched his wires if he worked on his own shit :boink:

He did give me permission to do it and I offered several times to drive the rental car I got from my accident down to fix it. He didn't want me to

I'm aware of my mistake and I offered to fix it the same way @TXpro4X4 did. I didn't have heat shrink and solder with me because I didn't go down expecting to need it. My 4runner never had an issue with the butt splice the previous mechanic put on its knock sensor wire, I don't know why it would work on one and not the other :notsure:

I usually knock the caps out, but since you guys supplied your own spindles I left them
In so I could tell them apart from my own cores and make sure you guys got the same spindles back that you brought me.

Lots of engine sensors get their signals from very small voltage variations (<1 vdc) so butt connectors can cause lots of issues because they are more prone to creating resistance than a proper solder job

Right, its just so weird that mine ran fine with the butt connector in there. The only thing I can come up with is because its a much more primitive computer it didn't register the change in resistance :notsure:

We did. Was between 2-4 inches depending on what part of town. Roads thawed by 12 but the dirt still has snow

There's also still people driving around on chains at 45 mph as of 10 mins ago...

Just because a butt connector is used it doesn't mean it won't work. But it does mean that it's easier to have a poor connection or inconsistent results with a butt connect or any other crimp on lug.

I do a lot of crimp on lugs at my day job (non-automotive of course) but we only do them using the proper crimping tool with proper dies. If crimp on lugs are done with a pair of pliers or other incorrect tool you get inconsistentcies in crimping pressure and ampacity. With the proper crimping tool and dies when you cut the the butt connector and wire you'll see a consistent solid looking conductor and lug, no air pockets or inconsistencies.

I rarely use crimp on lugs on a vehicle, never on sensors, and use the correct tool with does.

That wire on mine was so shabby I went and ordered a new wire from Toyota, I didn't trust it, especially after it all went wrong with Nick's. To this day his is the only sensor I've ever used a butt connector on. Every sensor and every pigtail I have replaced was with solder. Only time I really use them is when I'm doing basic connections like with my LED's. The reality is that wire should've never been cut to begin with but man that connector just would not come off!
