That's what I'm talking about. IIRC OV is working on this.

They say its undetectable, but if the dealership found out it would void the warranty on ALOT of components on the vehicle

Also ..... if you're worried..... you can reflash it back to the stock tune before you take it to the dealer ......
it'll take maybe 5 minutes to do that.

Ford dealers can check this and catch people all the time. Is there not a similar diagnostic tool toyota has? For Ford, they read how many times the ecu/engine has been turned on (or something very close to this) and if the number is lower than is reasonable for the miles/hours on the truck, they will call you on it. With Toyota being a much harder system to manipulate, I would think they would have at least equal if not better protections.

Mat ( @OVTune ) says that the Dealers do not have the tools to do this. This same issue has been brought up several times since the tune has comes out. AFAIK there has been no reports of any issues.

Maybe you should just wait till the warranty ends before you buy the tune. What year 3rd gen do you have?

Flashing your truck leaves the same “trail” as a battery disconnect does. Clears learning, resets DTCs, resets the counter that indicated how many miles since cleared, etc., but the same signature is left when you, say, replace your battery or disconnect it to install speakers, lights, etc.,

Mat has also been careful best I can tell to ensure any power gains are well within the range of safety. I’m sure Toyota would catch on eventually if head gaskets start blowing and whatnot but the tune has been focused more so on driveability than winding up the motor to its max.

I'm not really worried about that, I was just curious. People have filled me in on my misunderstanding of the situation. I have a 18 coming in on the 2nd and am trading a f150 in.

You might want to wait until the 18 tune is available and how it works on the 18.

The "artificial intelligence" aka learning is disabled when the Tacoma is driven in "S" mode. Right from the owner's manual, page 200:

What I wish, is that there was a normal old throttle cable. Make the power linear and predictable, and have a fast, smooth shifting transmission. I drive a lot of other vehicles when I pick up and drop off from dealerships, and the Tacoma is WAY behind in driveability compared to so many others.

Yeah. You either have to hammer down the pedal, which works but feels unrefined or you try to accelerate responsibly and....

So my old shift habits returned after a 1k-2K miles along with a clunk when downshifting while cold or after a cold start. I was on 1.02C Shift setting 1.

I flashed 1.02C shift setting 3 and after driving for a bit, I couldn’t reproduce the clunk. I’m thinking it’s the torque converter lockup experimenting that OVTune was doing that perhaps is causing this. I can’t log at the moment as my app isn’t functioning correctly.
It sounds like @bshammer0 isn’t having that issue so I’m hoping that it’s gone with 1.03.

AT owners, tuners - Does anyone run the tune in S-mode exclusively? The learning has definitely been further minimized in 1.03 test I'm running, and Mat's further whittling it away. BUT, part of me wonders - why are we all freaking out on the "D" mode learning when in reality we should just be able to slide over to "S" just like the SSP owners do and lock in the post-flash shifting?

Do any OVTunes ATs just run S-mode exclusively? I know no one WANTS to have to take an extra step each time you hop in your truck but if I could have my truck shift predictably each and every time with expert maps created by our very own OVTune, it's a compromise I personally would be willing to make especially combined with the incredible improvements in VVT, fueling, ignition, torque I'm experiencing on this test tune :)

I use S-mode about 85% of the time (1.02C-A). Even in S-mode, the truck tries to get up into 5th gear WAY too early. I usually just use S4 so it can't get all boggy up in 5th gear just over 30 mph.

One thing I can't stand in S-mode is the braking/decel/downshifting behavior. It is not smooth at all unless you are hard on the brakes. When slowing to a stop, you have to anticipate when the downshift will happen so you can let up on the brakes a little, otherwise the downshift causes the truck to lurch forward while braking. Not safe at all.

I still have the SSP, but took it out a while ago. Might put it back in and see how I like it along with OVT. It's really easy to get accustomed to shifting to S instead of D. After a while it was automatic, so its not a problem at all.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I do notice the decel / downshifts are more pronounced on S-mode but for city driving / traffic I find I hit my brakes a lot less when in stop/go kind of traffic. Interested, when Mat has time to learn more about what he's learned about S-mode b/c at one point he commented on how crazy fast the sample/refresh rate was in that mode. This always confused me a bit b/c I would have assumed S-mode is a bit more static. Another thing I'm not clear on is what "cancelling the learning" means exactly - does it carry learned values over from D, but just stop learning during that time or is it purely back to a "stock/standard" shift map. The world may never know...
