on my 2018 TRD Pro, I’m finding it hard to believe there’s so much noise coming from the trans in first especially, as well as some in second. Basically a whine that follows the RPMs as you accelerate. Been going on since delivery, and has 500 miles on it now, and still doing it just the same.

Sound normal? Searching didn’t turn up a lot on this topic, so that’s why it’s worrying me

UPDATE: It’s not transmission at all. It’s more of a normal drivetrain noise... Easy to replicate with another Tacoma Manual transmission. So, false alarm.

I'm not 100% sure, but 1st gear in mine sounds like it is straight cut, or maybe less helical than the rest? 2nd through 6th are silent.

Also, I found that it took about 1,000mi for the syncros to break in.

1st is definitely the most noticeable, so maybe it’s exactly what you’re saying

Easy to check the fluid level on a manual.

Worth doing, just for peace of mind.

Then allow some more break in time. It's not total miles for the trans, but more number of shifts. So some in town traffic is more effective.

It will. Early on, the shifting was what I would call notchy. Now, it's butter.

Mine is the same way. I changed the fluid, but it made no difference. I agree with what others are saying, but I'll add that first gear is incredible short, almost
shorter than the reverse gear, so it's going to make some noise due to the gearing.

Can you make a vid and post the link here?

My M/T has never made any excessive gear noise. As others have stated, the shifts are a bit notchy until the synchros break in. 3rd gear would "chunk" almost every time on mine. This gearbox is fully synchronized BTW, even reverse.

The only noise even remotely related to the tranny I get is the TOB complaining when it's well below freezing.

Here's a vid of mine, at the time I was showing how much the shifter moves... BTW that annoying buzz has been found and eliminated!

I suppose it is all relative, but 1st tops out at about 30mph. That isn't short to me. I wish reverse would top out at about 15mph so I don't have to use 4Lo to back up my driveway.

i also have the MT, i also changed all my fluids early on, and i also found my MT and rear diff levels measurably low. about 250-300ml low in the MT.

i would look at that ASAP, and i also agree with everything @tonered said re: break in.

Other 6 speed manuals sound exactly the same, so I’ll say false alarm.

I mis spoke and said whine, but it’s more of a drivetrain sound. So nothing to worry about. Fluids check out as well.
