Just read the whole thread. Rad work man. My dad built his house by himself when I was just a toddler. It's my goal one day, but land prices in the greater Vancouver area are insane, so it may never happen.

Worked on it all day yesterday until dark (took this pic at 06:30 this morning).


Aannnd................the 1st truck showed up around 09:00.

 

I am really liking the copper standing seam inlay. Beautiful home.

Is that straight poured concrete with no mesh? Assuming they used fiber reinforced? What depth: 4 or 5"?

Why did you decide on concrete over asphalt? I need to resurface my drive way as the asphalt was never cared for properly. I am weighing the options of concrete and asphalt. Cost of course is a huge factor as I know that concrete is more expensive. I am interested in hearing from you what your logic of thinking was. Thanks, OP.

 

Concrete is common down here. I originally wanted to do asphalt. I had the paving company come give me a quote and it was $9000!

I did the surface prep, formed it up and ended up pouring 32 yds of concrete. At around $160/yd for 32 yds is $5120. I paid the finisher (get this) $30/yd to finish. Said and done it was about $3000 cheaper for me to do the concrete, and my wife is happy.

 

Wow! That sounds like a winner to me! Unfortunately I have zero experience with prepping for concrete. Might have to find some new friends that do....

 

What mix was used if you know ? Just curious re cost per yard compared to me locally

What do you get up there/yd?

 

That would basically be 20mpa / 20mm aggregate here which would cost me about $200 CAN in winter , so pretty similar cost after conversion

Up here code states for slabs & driveways etc we need to use 32mpa (4500 psi) which is almost $300 / yard , thats why I asked

 

Final inspection day today .

Waiting for the inspector to show up.

 

Didnt pass the first time (not surprised). Everything was great except the smoke alarms (why I didn't pass). Since I have an attached garage the alarms outside of the bedrooms have to be both smoke and carbon monoxide .
The breaker for the alarm system also has to be AFCI.
No big deal, I'll swap that stuff out and try again tomorrow.

 

Kind of surprised that didn't say that in the drawings when they were approved by the inspector.
