I changed my oil yesterday and decided to use 0w-30.

Just thought that I get on here and find out what people think.. do you think that it is a good idea or a bad one?

    Thanks

Amsoil Synthetic ASL 5w30 Oil, Amsoil ATL Fuel Efficient ATF, Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90 in front/rear diffs & transfer case.
Assuming you're using a synthetic 0w30, I think that is a GREAT idea. "They" say 60-90% of an engines wear occurs at start up and a synthetic 0w30 will flow noticeably better than 5w30 on cold starts to get things lubricated more quickly. Also, this isn't always the case, but at least with the 0w30 oil I know of and use (Amsoil Synthetic Signature Series 0w30 which is arguably one of the best oils for extended drain intervals in the world) their 0w30 at operating temperature (where it is a 30 weight oil just like a 5w30 is as well) is slightly thinner than their 5w30 oil (but still a 30 weight oil and well within the operating range of a 30 weight oil). This translates into slightly better fuel economy and better oil flow which will help move heat away from critical areas.

The only problem with a 0w30 is even with synthetics they tend to be a little more volatile than 5w30 and 10w30 oils often times in similar lines (at least with Amsoil) so if your truck is burning any oil, the 0w30 will burn off a tad easier (probably not enough to worry about though).

I've run extended drain intervals with Amsoil's 0w30 SSO (which is discontinued, they've now revamped their entire line up where they have 4 signature series oils - the 0w30, 0w20, 5w30 and 10w30) on my '07 Tacoma and company van (Chevy Express) and after oil analysis on both they performed extremely well.

    +1

I did mobil 1 0w30 last time only because it could be found locally and I needed to do an oil change quickly. I'll be using amsoil products from now on. Have never heard anything bad about their products and recently saw a very in depth test about gear oils and amsoil dominated everything else in many categories and still had a reasonable price.

I would like to use 0w30 Synthetic because it gets below -40 here in the winter but the dealer says I need 5w30 or it'll void the warranty. In fact they say I should use conventional dino oil for the first 24,000 km then can use synthetic oil.

It's all the same at operating temps. Cold flow is different were it counts. Castrol 0w30 at operating temps is one of the thickest 30w's you'll find.

IMHO, your dealer doesn't know what he's talking about. Unfortunately, he will likely be your interface with Toyota if/when you need repair (i.e., warranty) service. In my experience, a good quality synthetic is better than dino oil, especially at lower temps.

ARB1977 and others are correct... It's all the same at operating temps. 0W-30 should have better cold flow properties, which is when/where it really matters.

I have a 2011 Tacoma pre-runner. I would like to switch to full send that it oil as I have 115,000 miles on my truck now. Will it hurt anything so long as I continue to change the filter and oil at 5000 mile increments?

No. I switched to full synthetic @ 175k and my only regret is not doing it sooner. Temps here in MN get down to -40.
I've noticed easier starts and overall smoother performance.

I’m in SC and it’s only been down in the teens and 20s here but I’ve heard the slight knocking at cold start up. Once warm it’s fine. This is after putting semi-synthetic this last time. I also out a pint of marvel mystery oil. Should I just go straight synthetic.

What filter are you running? If it's a cheapo stp, fram etc it won't have a anti drain back valve. Meaning rattle rattle knock knock on start up...
Install an high quality oem or wix filter and run full synthetic.

I really don’t know what filter. Assuming it’s a a valvoline that’s where I get my oil the changed.

    D3 all the way.

I have yet to see 0w30 in a store but it's been awhile since I've looked. Its a really good choice in the US.

We use 5w20 bulk on all older models now, haven't seen an issue on any 2.7, 3.4, 4.0 or otherwise. (cold climate)

I use 5w30 if the miles are super high.

10w30 is basically obsolete, the price is negligible and 5w30 does everything 10w30 does but better.

Yup that's a good one. Can't go wrong with oem or wix.

I bet your cold start knock will go away with the correct filter. Give it a whirl.

How does this work? I don’t change my own oil. Can I buy it and take it to the oil change place and they will install it?

I’m going to put a wix in today. Should I use synthetic or stick to conventional oil?

it doesn't matter as long as you change it at every 5k-6k miles
