Actually, I'm pretty sure I can read my ECU version with OBD fusion/Carista dongle. That's one way around the admission price.

@AFMurse2014 , do you have an OBD scanner or can u get access to one?

If you're early production like me (09/15), you'll definitely be 04B10 ECU. In any case, you shouldn't have to wait too much longer for results as Mat said the files are already done (presumably 1.03B M/T). There's going to be testing/feedback of course..

I just have a generic one from advance auto to pull codes. I'm looking closely at you guys to see how it goes. I got my truck November of 15 so I'm guessing it's a troublemaker

I really don't have much issues. Being smooth seems to be the only thing, rush certain aspects and it gets a bit rough. Find it pretty easy actually compared to my unsprung, 6 puck clutch I had in my Subaru.

FWIW, which isn't much, I test drove a 6MT today, I currently own a 5MT. There wasn't anything out of the ordinary, it drove like any other manual trans vehicle I have driven.

I've drove a lot of manual vehicles over years and owned 13. My Tacoma drives and shifts... normal? The question mark is because every vehicle is different but there is nothing unusual with the truck. Put it in gear, let out the clutch, give it the gas and repeat. Shifts easy. Now it does remind me a bit of a Suzuki RM250 I used to race 40 years ago. It was a two stroke with a power band. This truck accelerates fine up to 3500 rpm or so and then *boom!* you hit the power band lol. Seriously, no big deal. I drive 30K/yr and so far no issues with shifting at all.

same analogy I use...but imagine the power band of the 2 stroke, with the low rpm torque of a 4 stroke enduro.

    Would be sweet

Yeah and friggin hard to handle too! Imagine 20 other 250R's going into the first corner full out and the carnage that happened. Even as a teen we knew they were too dangerous, especially racing. They were like those clackers. Fun until somebody broke an arm!

Same here. Been driving stick since 1984 and worked in the heavy eqpt industry as a mechanic for 20yrs driving 9-13 speeds and HD 5-6 speeds splitting the gears with 2 speed rears.

You get used to it and just drive the thing.

The most fun is my brothers throwback, he still has a 90 Quadzilla that he restored about 2 years ago. We use to take money from streetcars with that thing. I think about it sometimes, and realize we should be fucking dead.

Coming from a "rice rocket" (2002 Acura RSX Type S) two months ago and my '17 TRD Sport 4x4 being my first truck, I find that I still have the occasional rough shift. Most of the time, though, it's pretty smooth. My wife hates manuals, and being in a truck (with truck chassis and suspension) doesn't help things, but if I'm not pushing it to get somewhere, I can get some smooth-as-silk shifts. Truck has about 1700 miles on so far. I'm still learning the various sweet spots for shifting this truck, but I have no complaints so far!

perhaps it's the electronic throttle that's killing me.. I've never driven one before this. My Manual experience includes 2006 Ranger 4.0 5sp, 97 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4.0 5 spd, 2008 honda accord, 89 F250 7.3 idi and a 4 spd ford 300I6... I just can't get over the boggyness or the huge drop in power off the start...

Yep, that's pretty much how I drive mine too. I get into second pretty good too, though the transition to third is a lot smoother (mostly because I think I like how the cat-back sounds around 4-5K in second ;). The only variation on your theme is in a 45mph zone. Then I go 1st-2nd-3rd-5th.

I have had 4 manuals and an auto. I guess my easiest shifting manual was an old Honda Accord. God those things are buttery. I don't need my truck to drive like that. I like that it has a little personality, even if it's not the smoothest.

If I have any gripe at all, it's not 1st-6th, it's the Reverse gear that you can drive 65mph in, but can't back up my driveway!

That might be the problem. My advice to you is simply adapt. Forget the last manual you drove. Forget the one before that too. Just naturally give it the gas (or more gas) and start at a higher rpm. That's what I always do. I drove an old dump truck a few months ago while doing some testing down in Georgia. Had to move it out of the way. It certainly didn't drive like my Tacoma! It took about one release of the clutch and press of the pedal to realize this. I just went with doing what was needed to do. Oh, the reason I was the one to move it? The other younger engineers with me couldn't drive a stick haha.

Guess I'll try more gas off the start. Just going to shorten that clutch life =( My ranger went 150k on one clutch, I only changed it because the slave went out and since it was internal slave I had to drop everything. Clutch still had approx 65% left.

I made this vid for you bb. Truck will literally idle at 4 mph in 2nd gear. It rumbles but it's not lugging or anywhere close to stalling completely. No $800 tune and I'm on 33s.
