I've noticed that when I sometimes apply the brakes I hear a "clack" sound, Its not when I press the brake hard, only a tiny bit of pressure needs to be applied and the sound will happen. It doesnt happen every time I press the brakes but here and there.

    ANY IDEAS??

i was told there is some sort if cover on the brakes and when going from reverse to forward the cover is shifting from front to back or vise versa. Chris said this noise is totally harmless. well on a 2wd it is, on 4wd's it could be your CV's but Mine does have a distinct "clack". maybe one day Ill climb under the truck and try and tighten up any bolt I can see but from what I was told is that its nothing to worry about

Normal. It's just the play in the pads where the pins slide through them (if you don't know what I'm talking about, do a search for pictures of how the front pads mount in the Taco.

Anyway, you'll find it happens when you switch from going forward to reverse, or vice versa. For example, back up the truck in reverse and come to a stop. Then go forward and you'll hear it when you first use the brakes. Same goes if you were driving forward then come to a stop. Then back up and apply the brakes. You'll hear it then.

Agreed its just shifting back and forth. If it was CV joints you would notice continuous popping while turning.

I had the same problem about 2 months ago. Took it in for a maintenNce service and the tech inspected/cleaned up the brakes and the problem was gone. My service manager (who I trust) said it's fairly common. The pads were not worn too badly. Clacking sound only happened after every forward/reverse transition. The noise is due to the pads shifting inside the calipers.
