I almost never use S Mode. If I wanted a Manuel I would have purchased a manual. Part of me regrets not doing so to begin with.

Yeah, I hear that. I'm actually not proposing we treat it like a manual though - just be able to shift it to S5 or S6 on startup and leave it. Still, I know we'd all love to just throw it in D and never think about it again (like most automatics historically) and with what i'm seeing from Mat, he's probably about to nail it but always good to have options.

I have been using the shift sense pro for about 6 months. The last month has been with the tune. I tried using just the tune and the truck ran a bunch better but it is still powered by an astmatic mouse. The guy at SSP is great to work with and I am now running and updated chip that contains 3 shift programs.. It shifts into 5th at 63mph and 6th (double overdrive) at 73. This is using the 3rd program which he called the towing version. He also lowered the downshift "threshold" for me so I would not have to gouge on it to downshift..
I,m sure Matt can achieve the same results with the tune and I hope he does. I think keeping truck as weak as this one in it,s "power" range is just as important as the engine tuning. Or is equally benificial .... Max

Report again if you would, after running with both SSP and Tune after more than 1000 miles or so . See if you feel the truck seems to have learned any old habits or if the tune has degraded as some here experience while in D.
It may be as simple as OVtune to program the tune to tell the truck it is in S mode to stop the learning .

S mode isn't manual, it simple limits the top gear to whatever is selected. If you put it in S-2 and plant your foot a 10mph it'll still change down to 1st but not going into 3rd.

I only use it for limiting to 5th when towing.

    No, I'm not.

People have been asking Mat to change it to lock it to a gear for months, it simply doesn't work that way from factory. It limits the TOP gear.

    this is correct.

From Page 196 in the owners manual:

*2: Selecting shift ranges using S mode restricts the upper limit of the possible gear ranges, controls engine braking forces, and prevents unnecessary upshifting.

I guess I am the one that side tracked the issue by asking if a combination of the SSP AND the OVtune would stop the AI learning that seems to be a problem while enjoying the TQ and HP gains .This was never a what's a better product . It was an idea to help solve the problem of the original Toyota weak engine/trans combos that the 3rd gen has .
    @OVTune ?

Or when they say they are correct, because they think they are, and then delete said comments.
Did Mat say that learning is still present in S mode?
I wonder if the default gear for S mode could be "S5" instead of "S4"? @OVTune

Like I said, not trying to side track a thread anymore than it has been. We can chat via private messages or you guys can open another thread. Either way I’d like to focus more on OVTune updates.

I'm one of them and will continue to ask... Matt have said it many times that he's going to do it. Last he stated it will be done on 1.03 but I'm sure it's not going to happen. I'm not going to rush him because I know there's other important things he needs dail in.

It really feels like 4th. Say you're on the highway doing 70-75, and you switch over to "S" mode. It downshifts every time, leading me to believe it's default is 4. Anyone else experience this?

yeah, I don't think I've ever seen it shift to anything higher than 4 but I could be wrong. I know that if I've switched over at low speeds it will sometimes start in 3rd but I haven't noticed it shift to 5th, in fact I'm careful not to shift it over there if I'm going very fast b/c of a potential harsh downshift I've experienced.

The SSP vs. OV vs. PC debate exists in many other threads and my asks about S-mode were not intended to re-ignite this debate here, however I do believe a clear understanding of how S-mode operates as it relates to shift performance and AI is relevant to the OV conversation (and the manual is notably light on descriptions to the technical level most of us would like to understand...) as we work to collectively provide feedback and perfect the tune characteristics. He has it damn close, folks!

U got me wrong. What I was saying is that ov should make the default gear for s mode in whatever gear the truck in. sorry for the confusion..
