Towed my boat today...

Bought my truck a couple weeks ago. Its an 05 TRD PreRunner with 100k miles on the clock. Today I wanted to work on my truck in the garage, so I moved the boat out. I thought this would be a good time to see how the truck would tow it. Previously I had towed it with an 07 Tundra that had the 5.7. With the Tundra you really didn't even know it was there, but the Tacoma seemed to tow pretty good as well, but you could definitely feel it during braking. Overall I was pleased.

The truck is starting to look better. I wet sanded the headlights and polished them, polished the wheels, clay barred and waxed. Turned out nice. Also washed the boat while I had it out.

When I bought the boat, I just thought it looked cool! Will probably never use it. The Bimini top comes in handy, though.

 

That seems to be a big issue with these Tacomas, the brakes. I hope engineers smarten up and put disks all the way around when they redo the Tacoma in a couple years. When I took a trip out to the desert I had about 800 lbs of gear in my bed and I could definitely feel the brakes lagging.

On a different note: Nice boat! And the truck looks clean! Were your headlights hazy?

 

They seemed to have alot of scratches. They turned out OK. They look better.

Drums brakes stop just as well as discs. The only difference is discs dissapate heat better. The only time you would even begin to notice rear brake fade would be in extreme braking conditions such as racing the truck on a road course...which I wouldn't recommend. I would love to see discs as well because they look better...however in normal conditions, Drums stop just as well as discs. Plus on most vehicles the rear brakes only do between 30-40% of the braking anyways. Hence why you don't have to change your rear shoes as often as you replace the front pads.

I will say that you do notice the brakes when towing but thats to be expected when you tow something that weighs as much as the vehicle.

for the OP...does your trailer have surge brakes?

 

No, no surge brakes. I think it is too small.
