Just the front, e-locker in the rear.

I like it alot. And I wheel pretty hard. It took a little getting used to.

If your driving in 4wd, and you take your hands off the steering wheel around a slight bend in the road the steering wheel will want to center and pull you straight ahead. A little getting used to. But I barely use the e-locker anymore...

In 4wd if the actuator fails? No. Open, you'll have at least a "useable" driver's side front axle.
Supposedly, no front drive with a truetrac with one side of the diff freewheeling.

Yes, the inner CV shafts are the same either way so you can use your existing front differential.

1995-2000 Tacoma - Toyota stopped using manual hubs after that.

I custom made them in Photoshop CS6. It's several layers of plastic projector transparency glued together.

The icon is the 4WD emblem from a Toyota Rav4.

I hadn't considered the pushbutton transfer case when I started this thread, because at the time I thought 1st gen Tacomas and 3rd gen 4Runners only had J-shift transfer cases. I had a great phone conversation with @Buck18, whose 1st gen double-cab had bad vibes on the freeway and was constantly munching CV axles.

He set me straight on pushbutton transfer cases and it was quickly obvious to both of us that it's best to leave the ADD actuator in working order if you have one of those. That cute little 4WD button is the only way to shift in and out of 2-HI and 4-HI while moving.

It's a little less adaptable than the J-shift transfer case, which can do that with or without the ADD actuator. But he will still be able to unlock the hubs for normal daily driving and greatly reduce drivetrain vibrations and CV axle wear. I have updated post #1 with the info.

Yeah 2-4 trucks use both actuators in tandem afaik. Not one without the other.

Manual hubs can be bought new for around $140 a piece. All the manual hub parts (hubs/ bearings) are acaavaila & can be pressed into ADD spindles.

yeah, they all add up though and it would suck to find out you're missing something when trying to piece it together. I guess I'll keep the ADD knuckles as spares and try to find time to rebuild them. Now what to do about the ADD axles....

I did the manual swap on my 1990 4R when the time came to redo the front bearings. Found a set in a junkyard after having looked for about 6 months. Those faded red dials caught my eye from across the yard and there I was, yanking them off, spindles and all with hand tools from an IFS Pickup sitting on old tires and wheels. Even though they seemed okay in spite of rotting in the yard, I got a rebuild kit from the Wabbit and went to town one day. Before doing the swap, I tested MPG with three successive tanks of gas, and then with three post-swap. I got *maybe* 1-2 MPG more, but the real win was taking stress off the front end.

    Great write up!

Bumping this- just did manual hub swap, completely negated the add system so used the manual diff tube and got rid of the add tube/actuator all together.

Lost the dash indicator, and I want it just for shits.

Truck the manual hubs came out of and went back into are nearly identical mechanically besides the ADD and manual hub difference

    Manual hubs went into 99 5vzfe 5 speed 4wd SR5 Tacoma

Manual hubs came out of of 97 5vzfe 5 speed 4wd LX Tacoma

Anyone have any idea on how to get that indicator working again?

I read this entire thread, some mentioned a 4wd computer under the dash, is this a part I could swap with the donor truck?

I'm sorry I can't help you with the dash indicator. I never cared about it working because if the hubs are locked and the transfer case is shifted out of 2HI, it's definitely in 4WD.
