Just edited. Been a long day. Yes, unless you turn it off via upper console button. In 4 LO, press the squiggly line, and it changes to open diffs. Did I get it right? Anyway, it’s always active, unlike 2WD where you have to turn it on.

I am now officially going to call it the "squiggling burnout button."

    Aye yai yai!

I guess I will need to take a test drive in a new Tacoma 4WD Off Road or ride in someone's so I can take notes and post a clear chart? Too many are confused between TRAC ON and TRAC OFF; VSC ON & VSC OFF; AUTO LSD; etc. (and I don't blame you, it is crazy).

Too bad there is not a technical manual sheet on the brake functions as there was for the 2009-2011 series. That sheet was so insightful on what was going on with the brakes and engine regulation in each mode.

Here is that sheet made for the 2009 Tacomas that was so helpful for clearing up what is going on in the different drive modes (if anyone can produce one for the 3rd Gens, please do so!):

    56f9e273-312d-4db9-b1b9-d581d738ae69_2757cf74078e37198c3411cd53333ecc0e0f3d3d.jpg

Note that AUTO LSD = TRAC OFF, as this is the higher level of limited slip/traction control. In H4, before 2012, the mode was automatically in TRAC OFF, but it was simply called TRAC (but no engine regulation, same as AUTO LSD in H2).

The confusion is using the word OFF when it is more TRAC, not turned off TRAC. The regulation of engine output is what is turned OFF.

Heres what my 6MT TRD OR does.

4LO default with ATRAC switched off. The ATRAC button is actually a switch. If left in on state it'll default on in 4LO. Squiggle burnout button no longer does anything once in 4LO.20180122_183226.jpg

See my previous post for 2017 auto in a TRD off-road for my observations of dash lights and observed brake operations. I am begging for some other people to do the same testing so we can make a new comprehensive table. You will notice that the TRD-offroad in 4Lo defaults to open diffs, until you turn on MTS or crawl. Not the expected behaviour for me. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...s-non-trd-offroad.437814/page-7#post-16935442

    Very good! THANKS Doggman!

It is so odd that when in VSC OFF, the TRAC OFF light remains on. In VSC OFF, there is neither TRAC or VSC.

The slightly odd function is in AUTO LSD (TRAC OFF in H2), the VSC OFF light is on to 30 mph, then goes out (meaning VSC is off until 30 mph in H4 using AUTO LSD).

Can you test it in H4, with TRAC OFF light on, at 0-35 mph, is the VSC light off to 30 mph (as it is in H2)?

Yes, I saw it... but my eyes have a hard time reading the tiny text, sorry! Don't get old... after 55 it really goes downhill! LOL

EDIT: Not sure I understand the defaults to open diffs part? Unless locked, are differentials are always open. If you mean without any traction controls, as we think of open diffs, then yes, okay. So, you contend there is no TRAC or TRAC OFF happening in L4, as this thread implies?

I can't tonight but I'll see what it does tomorrow on the way to work. I expect it to stay off though. In 2HI with a single press of the VSC button the VSCoff light is on from 0-30 and turns off after 30mph. In 4HI the VSCoff light doesn't come on unless you hold the button down. When you hold it down in 2HI the VSCoff stays lit past 30 I think.

For automatic TRDoffroad, we have MTS and crawl control in 4Lo (which are powerful traction control systems). But if you put it into 4Lo, the default until you hit the MTS or CC is fully open diffs, without any traction control (per my experiments)
The SR/etc default to TRAC turned on when you go to 4Lo (which is a significantly strong traction control system).

Anyone in Southern Cal up for some play at Hungry Valley? It would be neat to have an OR and sr/sr5/sport/Lmtd test their side by side.

Its different for TRD ORs and the other models. 4lo takes you straight to TRAC OFF and VSC Off and the only way to change either of those is to turn on ATRAC which turns the TRAC OFF light off.

Based on the video and the lights I would say non TRD ORs do have standard traction control available for use in 4Lo. This differs from the TRD ORs in that we have ATRAC and MTS which is a more advanced/stronger traction control specifically designed for offroad use.

Makes sense. Default is trac on in most cases. In fact the MT TRD OR doesnt really default to TRAC OFF in 4LO. It defaults to whichever state you have the ATRAC switch toggled to.

Haha damn. Long tube headers into glass packs side exit. I dont know if I'd say it sounds great but it's something.

You'd need to at least turn off VSC for that though as it would cut power when you started slipping if it was on.

There’s a first Gen across the ways that sounds bad ass. I doubt it’s a V8, but it sure as heck sounds like one.

As far as I know, there are only two different "systems."
TRD OR and TRD Pro have Crawl Control and Multi Terrain Select and ATRAC. And a rear locker.

SR, SR5, TRD Sport and Limited do not have Crawl Control or Multi Terrain Select or ATRAC or a locker. However, we have 4HI, 4LO, TRAC and VSC and they go just fine off road.

    Is this correct guys?

Not exactly. ALL Tacomas have TRAC and VSC.
Since I was here earlier, again we have the confusion of what AUTO LSD and other features are.
Then someone thinks I am trying to confuse others, when that is the opposite of my efforts or intentions.
So, I will sit back and watch.
That only non-Off Roads have traction control in low range (the latest thinking here) is odd.
