I have to agree, in regards to DAC. If you search thread titles for "DAC" there are only three threads which address this feature specifically here at TW. Virtually nobody likes this feature. Only one person has expressed interest in using it (jandrews). David may be the second.

I found that for going down steep hills off-road, shifting the transfer case into 4LO and the tranny in 1st gear gave me the best control.

The bed outlet is pretty much worthless (good watts, bad amps). I do like the outside temp guage, but I'm a weather freak. ATRAC is great in 4lo. In 4lo SR5 basically operates with open diffs. But as others pointed out, when the need arises, you can just add an ARB air locker and you're good to go. It may not be as good as ATRAC + the e-locker engaged, but then again an ARB is useable in 2wd, 4hi and 4lo. The e-locker is 4lo only (unless you mod).

When all is said and done, the TRD is a great factory offroad package ready to go straight off the showroom floor. I like it because I didn't want to dick around with aftermarket lockers and mods. But if you don't mind (or prefer) to mod, you can do a lot with the SR5. As others said, its a great platform on which you can build.

off toyota site: the trd OR option is 2770.00 trucks on the lot range from 32-42k
the 42k truck had a 6in lift from the factory.

arb locker is ~ 1k for the locker 500 for the accessories and (someone chime in) about 750 i would figure for installation.
i dont know the cost but drew02 has one and he could tell you. his is on a stand. cab 4cyl. 2gen.

I chose the TRD OR package because I don't want to mod out my truck, but needed a good off road truck during hunting seasons. Tires are probably the only thing I will change the first 50K miles. I liked all the extras in the TRD OR versus the SR5 too. I have owned a 4wd with open differentials and I have been stuck in places that a locked rear would have cruised through.

If money isn't an issue then buy the TRD off road. If money is an issue, which I assume it is, or you would have bought what you really wanted in the first place, then get what you can afford and put some upgrades into as you can afford it. The SR5 is a good place to start for a guy that needs to watch his expenses. No shame is buying what you can afford.

yes especially if you have a manual tranny...you can downshift to slow down and not have to use the brakes....try 1st gear in 4L....top speed is like 2mph...lolll...and you can use the parking brake to help you start on a steep hill if necessary

alot of these things may be better or make things easier but if you can drive you don't "need" them

No, they don't. TRAC shuts off in 4L, and you are left with open diffs. Ironically, this makes 4H more capable.

If I were to swap out my Taco and get a new one right now I would go with the SR5 + tow package most likely.

Most of the extra bells and whistles on the TRD are things I would probably swap out for after market anyways which make makes spending extra $ for the TRD stuff pointless. I think you can install an after market rear locker for around $1000 anyways.

I would like the seats, especially the TRD sport leather ones my friend has. But things like extra power outlets and stuff can be added on your own time for less money and better quality.

Thanks for the info. I had done alot of research after my 2wd purchase and although I love the Prerunner TRD OR, I believe the 4x4 SR5 would better suit my needs. If I find myself going off road alot I can add a better aftermarket locker, the tires and wheels are going to be replaced within a few months either way (the TRD wheels are cool although I am a black rim kind of guy and after having the BFG AT's on my jeep, I am sold of those tires). I thought the clock/compass was an sr5 thing. So anything that I might need down the road, can be added aftermarket and better quality (besides, why finance stuff I do not need) but cannot add 4x4.

Compass/Temp in the overhead is TRD specific if that is what you are referring to.

The SR5 with the tow package was perfect.
I dont go rock crawling or in enough mud to need the locker.
The only thing you need to change are the stock tires ( on all the trucks )
I suggest goodyear wrangler Duratrac's, I would put my SR5 with Duratrac's against any stock trd off-road.
Before you start, yes the off-road with Duratrac's would be better.
The point being, unless you need the locker. the SR5 is just as good but cheaper.

p.s. - i used to be a BFG AT guy, untill now. Duratrac's!

ATRAC and the Locker are worth the price of the OR package by themselves. The rest is just gravy.

My ideal truck would have ATRAC, HD cooling & skidplates as an option, without all the other junk (subwoofer, DAC,HSA,Inverter, overhead console, stickers), including the fake all-terrain tires. Just a truck.....

Here's a great thread with tons of info on TRAC vs ATRAC vs Auto LSD plus info on an apparent wire mod you can do to get TRAC in 4lo on non-TRD trucks - ironically started by Isthatahemi...

Maybe I'm missing something, but my 2010 Prerunner has the TRD and SR5 packages. Why not get both? I just passed 1000 miles and I'm loving the best of both worlds.

I do believe all TRDs are SR5s, so that is a given, but the man wants 4WD... and that is the next tier up...

    1) 2WD SR5
    2) 2WD TRD OFF ROAD or TRD SPORT (PRERUNNER)
    3) 4WD SR5
    4) 4WD TRD SPORT
    5) 4WD TRD OFF ROAD*

*With a hydraulic brake booster and Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), this model is far and away the most superior traction truck made by Toyota.

With Hemi's help, I made this post on explaining the drive modes and included some YouTubes of A-TRAC in action: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/te...uto-lsd-explained-easy-understand-i-hope.html

Yeah, the TRD packages start with the SR5 features and add on top of them. Toyota's marketing literature even lists them this way, describing the TRD packages as "includes SR5 options plus..."
