Is that the same for the 2nd gen E-Locker housing as well, or 3.25" only for the 8.4 sport housing?

Do you have a link to that specific thread? There's a bunch but nothing I've found has been that specific.

I thought I'd pass along this tip for anyone with a 3.4L (or any engine that has the filter in an awkward spot, boxed in like a turtle's pecker. I changed my oil and filter today and my hand-strength isn't what it used to be so I was having an issue being able to get the filter loose. I don't have a filter wrench that fits it and I didn't want to have to drop my skid plate to get a different angle on it or drive a screw driver through it. What I did was, I took one of my nylon tie down straps and wrapped it around the filter with the long end hanging down from under the truck. I held the short end (the inner end, up near the filter with my hand on the filter and pulled the long end with my other hand. Worked like a charm and gave me enough torque to loosen the filter...sort of a poor man's strap wrench. It probably worked better than an oil filter wrench given how tight it is in that area.

Anyway, if you're having trouble, it's something to try before having to resort to driving a screw driver through the filter.

    Good advice Lee!

The top and front mounted filter on the 4.0 is without a doubt one of my favorite features. Don't miss the placement of that filter on the 3.4 at all.

Somewhere I remember reading that the reason that filter is in such an odd spot is the engine was used in equipment in Japan before being made a car motor so the filter is easy to access when the motor is rear mounted in a fork lift but sucks when it was put into trucks.

    Or something like that...

Personally I only ever run filters down till they touch, then about 1 turn and a 1/4 turn back, and use a nice coating of fresh oil on the seal and clean the old oil off the sealing ring on the block with some break clean and a rag.

Reminds me of a story though...

I once changed oil for a friend on her Jeep who had last taken it to Napleton Christler/Jeep/Dodge...

That filter may as well had been welded in place, drain plug too!

I first noticed that the filter had broken tack weld points where there was supposed to have been a removal nut on the top similar to K&N filters. I first tried by hand with the filter, no dice, tried a soft strap wrench, broke that, nope, tried a compression filter wrench, nope, the filter was too thick walled to really drive a screw driver through, actually broke one trying, finally got it off with a pipe wrench and still had to use some muscle, it even more the filter body while coming off.

    Then the drain plug...

Her dad had stripped it off near completely round trying to remove it, so I found a nut that would fit over the head, (ended up being a 30mm OD nut) plug welded it on to the drain plug, then used a 6 point socket and a 16" breaker bar driven by a floor jack (tried with all I had by hand, no dice) to break that sucker loose. Almost had a wheel off the ground just before it finally popped. And it went with a bang! I was afraid I had broken the bolt off in the pan. Fortunately not. After fully removing the drain plug I saw there was what was left of an aluminum crush washer in place, it had been crushed thin as tin foil and pretty much bonded to both the pan and the plug.

I still have no idea how the gorilla that originally changed her stuff didn't break anything.

The dude must have put the oil filter and drain plug in with a 1/2 drive air impact going full tilt! Would explain how the filter nut got broken off.

    What an ass!

I'll never do any business with Napleton, not just because of that experience. I personally, got seriously burnt by them.

Geez, that's some scary shit there.

I only put my filter on hand tight with a lubed gasket and a cleaned sealing surface, but it seems to get tighter over time (I only change it once a year) and at times my hand seems to have more horsepower than it does at others. Unfortunately, the times it seems to have less is when I'm taking the thing off, haha.

Edit: I hate giving Chevy any credit outside of being cheap, but I do have to give it to them: old skool Chevy engines had the best oil filter placement I've seen...stright down from the back of the engine. They could be removed easily without making a mess. Old skool Fords weren't too bad either, but they were mounted at an angle so you'd get oil running down the body while turning it off. Was easy to get to though.
