To figure out the gear ratio? Call a Toyota parts department with the VIN and ask. You can also find the gear code on the VIN sticker and use a thread on here (forget what it's called) to decode it.

    B03A is 4.10 IIRC. I have B07A which is 4.30.

    4RUNNERS ARE NOT THE SAME!

The VIN is also on the front diff somewhere? Reason I'm asking is because I'm concern that some of these salvage yards will just pull whatever they have and ship it.

That's what happened to me. The yard told me it was a 4.30 but it was a 4.10. Unless you can physically see the vehicle it came off of and the VIN sticker on the 'B' Pillar or Windshield, do not buy it. 4Runners use a different gear coding than Tacomas, but you can use the same differential. I have a 1996 Limited 4Runner Differential in my 1998.

The differential itself does not have a VIN. I don't think anything besides the frame, 'B' Pillar, and windshield has it.

The only way I would feel comfortable buying a diff blind is opening the clamshell and counting the teeth on the ring and pinion gears. Divide the ring by the pinion, in my case: 43 teeth on the ring gear, 10 on the pinion. 43/10 = 4.3 or 4.30

The only surefire way I'd trust is physically counting the teeth on the gears. You will fry your transfer case so fast if you have mis-matched gear ratios.

And yes, I hear you on the 4runner situation. Since the seller isn't responding its probably been sold.

    Plans are

    1. get a whole truck
    - one to where I can just swap out what I need and place my 2wd tranny in there and sell.
    - or one where its pretty damn bad and I'll just strip it for what I need.
    - I might end up with a 5spd 4x4 truck and it will be a place.

    2. Order parts here and there
    - problem with doing it this way is that I might not get what I had asked for and will be a hassle to ship back and forth or deal with credit card company.

Either way I still will have to find manual hubs because I haven't been able to find an 01+ with it.

I collected parts over the course of six months. Obviously it will be easier to have a whole parts truck, but collecting parts piece-meal is possible. I've put a little bit under $2,000 into parts.

I have manual hub assemblies for sale if interested. The dial faces are brand new from Toyota, I just swapped my old hub body and clutch assembly since my dials are powder-coated.

I took "take your time" a little too seriously...

Here they are. The dial faces are completely brand new from Toyota besides the inner dial o-ring and snap ring which I swapped from my hubs. The hub body and dial clutch assembly have 160k on them. I re packed them with grease and they're ready to go onto a spindle.

I rebuilt my other manual hubs with new hub bodies and clutch assemblies. Nothing was wrong with these I just wanted new ones. My other dial faces are powder coated which is why I didn't use these.

(I didn't pack this one with grease yet when I took the picture)

You don't always have to separate your front clamshell to determine your front diff ratio. Another way to check diff gear ratio is to jack up the vehicle, paint mark the drive shaft and one of the axle shafts. Where it is an open diff you will have to keep the other axle shaft from turning. Turn the axle that you paint marked one revolution and count the revolutions the drive shaft makes. If it is 4:10 the drive shaft will turn just over 4 revolutions, if it is 4:30 the drive shaft will turn 4 1/3 revolutions.
This is a quick way to determine ratio when you are trying to get a proper diff at the pick and pull.

I know this method. It's a little hard to do when you have a diff that's not on a vehicle anymore though. I used that method in determining my rear gear ratio

Of course counting gear teeth on the ring gear and pinion gear will give you the exact ratio. However in the absence of tearing apart a diff and if you have carefully applied your paint marks, if you can't see the difference between 1/10 (36 degrees) of a revolution and 3/10 (108 degrees) of a revolution, then the problem is definitely not this method.

Tell me what gear ratio I have if 1 full axle rotation equals almost 1 full shaft rotation?

One wheel is spnning, that is what I have read to do. Keep one wheel chucked and lock and spin the other.

I full axle rotation and 1 ....7/8's shaft rotation?
