Absolutely all have TRAC and a bunch of common features. I just broke it into two groups because of CC, MTS and Diff lock. To me that those options make the system considerably different.
I would be willing to make a chart showing all the 4WD features depending on which model. I can provide data for the TRD Sport 4WD manual trans. If a group can get me the features for each type then I will put it together.

Proper terminology being used would probably help with making sure everything remains clear in this thread. All factory stock Tacoma’s that aren’t Offroads or Pros have open diffs. All factory stock Pros and Offroads have an open front diff and a selectable locking rear diff. Electronic traction control aids are not synonymous or the same things as closed/locked diffs. Engaging crawl control, MTS, or ATRAC does not make an open diff not an open diff.

If TheChief86 pulled a big locked duramax out of a snowy ditch, then pulled himself and the Chevy up an iced hill to safety...and the video that PB showed us, particularly where the pumpkin catches and drags, I’m convinced this auto lsd is strong and in some form does mimick Atrac. Is it Atrac? No, but it sure is a bona fide system. I’m not missing the locker and Atrac on my previous ‘12 whatsoever.

That is correct. Default 4L setting is TRAC OFF light not lit up, and the squiggly lines firing off when the traction control system is working activating the brakes.

If you hold the vcs/trac button for longer than 5 Second it deactivates everything.

This form of TRAC did not work in 4H.

I think we are actually getting pretty good at describing it. Unfortunately, it is difficult to use 'Proper Terminology' when Toyota did such a bad job of defining the terminology in the first place.

From the owner's manual (this is 2017 owners manual shown), the SR/sport, etc have TRAC, VSC, and Trailer sway by default in 4LO. Quick press turns off TRAC, long press turns off TRAC, VSC, and trailer sway. Note, it says "4WD MODE" in the title
NOTE, per my testing, the Off-Road DOES NOT HAVE TRAC in 4LO. 4LO in the Off-Road defaults to TRAC-OFF. This is why people are saying there are 'two systems'. Let me put it this way, there are two sets of default settings and settings choices. One set for SR/Sport, etc and One set for Off-Road/Pro. They are not always the same, for some modes they are the same.

I don't think it is fair to say that an open diff is an open diff is an open diff when discussing these systems. Obviously these traction aids are not locked diffs, but they are sure not the open diffs I had on my Toyota Pickup or First Gen (5 lug) either. If we want better terminology for this stuff, unfortunately we will have to decide on it ourselves, because Toyota did us no help in that area.

And I will say again, I would love it if somebody would repeat the testing I started a few pages back on some other trim levels. I think you will learn alot about your truck.

It is the same open diff. It's not the diff that is different, it's the use of brakes to increase traction.

As far as terminology, there was a few posts about that earlier in this thread. You have it covered nicely in your spreadsheet. I think the only dangler is when and where the power cut to the engine comes in and what to call it. In most cases, I have not felt the power cut.

I apologize that I have not been able to get the spreadsheet fully filled out.

I agree it's pretty confusing. Reasons: a) mixed/confusing terminology b) horrible and/or lacking explanations from Toyota c) variations on different Tacoma models/trim.

All I know is that my automatic trans Sport seems to have an extra traction gizmo in default 4Lo, which I can disable by pushing in the squiggly burnout button for 3-4 seconds. I am happy to know the truck has some additional traction control in 4Lo.

    Automatic or Manual?
If automatic I can guarantee, place in 4Hi and dont press anything.

(If you press VSC off button short press or long press and get the 'TRAC OFF' light on the dash, you are not getting ANY LSD I will guarantee on the OR Auto)

(Edit to add, so people dont get angry. NO you don't have an actual LSD. You have open diffs that the truck attempts to simulate a LSD using brakes)

Tested 4HI with only TRAC OFF light on today. The VSC OFF light stays off no matter the speed but in addition the TRAC OFF light will turn off past 30mph. So it's kind of swapped with 2HI but seems to do the same thing - turn traction control back on past 30.

In 2HI VSC OFF light stays on until 30 then turns off.
In 4HI TRAC OFF light stays on until 30 then turns off.

In both 2HI and 4HI if you hold down the VSC button both TRAC OFF and VSC OFF will light up and stay lit up regardless of speed.

I think officially per Toyota it would have to be TRAC, but who the hell knows.

    It's called TRAC. That's all.

A-TRAC is Advanced TRAC that the MT ORs have.

"TRAC" (which would explain the "trac off" light that appears when you push the button down in 4Lo.

    Got it!

The reason I posted the video of the Tacoma hill climb. I also have not experienced power being cut. The manual says “may.” I’d imagine that refers to getting sideways in such a way that vsc/power cut may come into play.

Only way to find out is to play.

New thread suggestion! Link it to this thread and possibly have a Mod put the link in the OP.

Reserve the first five posts for the various configurations (1: SR/SR5/Sport MT, 2: SR/SR5/Sport/Limited AT, 3: OR MT, 4: OR/Pro MT, and 5: OR/Pro AT)? I don't care about the actual order. ;)

Once we have one or two confirmed spreadsheets for each model, the OP of that thread (I nominate @BigWhiteTRD ) can update those reserved posts?
