The more you can fit in boxes that fit the bed the better you'll be.

If you have an army surplus store near by go check out the medical chests. What I use. Two side by side fit perfect between the bed rails. They are aluminum so won't rust either and and heavy duty. I use one as the OSK and one for the kitchen box. Then two slimmer ones fit on top and hold tools and dry food. Weather proof sealed too. Love em. Not super cheap but a good option.

Yeah this is the current box setup I went out west with:

Right is Kitchen box, Left is weather proof and sealed dry box, rear is half my OSK that contains a jack stand, fluids, etc. Parts box is under the dry box. Ideally I will replace the dry box with a chainsaw/extended recovery box for harder wheeling/exploration and keep another box for a dry food box for longer more "overland" trips. Or I refactor my dry food storage into a smaller plano container. It's an ever evolving setup.

Build an easy drop in platform for the floor. Then you can keep recover gear and stuff in pelican/Plano cases and slide them under it. Make it just tall enough to fit the cases. Then keep your current setup on top but still contained in the bed

I won't be able to run chain saw in a plano case though. But I like the direction of this idea. I can just get another plano gun case similar to my parts one for recovery gear and keep it under the kitchen box. Though that's where my tables are. A swing out bumper is slowly becoming more attractive to clear bed space. But I have ideas on being able to remove the carriers and tire easily in case I want to carry long sheets of plywood/sheetrock.

Chainsaw can go anywhere they aren’t hard to find space for and a lot of the swingouts use a spindle with bearings now so pop off a dust cap and take one greasy nut off and your back to normal

That spare tire is killing you for space.

On long distance trips, you will want to bring the chainsaw to certain areas. Trust me.

this is how i went. it gives the spare somewhere outside the bed and keeps a "tailgate" that is easily removable. 2 bolts and 2 pins. you lose the table from the actual tailgate but im still planning to do a dropdown like most swingout manufacturers offer. also been debating a access roll up cover for dry storage. im tired of moving stuff to the rear seat when it starts raining (motorcycle gear i dont want soaked). maybe a roof rack for small plano cases?

Not sure Mike needs a chainsaw.

He’s pretty good with that axe.

Get a swing out and a roof rack. That'll free up some space for ya. Throw some spare parts in a 42" Plano like I do. But I'm pretty sure I read somewhere you don't want a swingout? If not look into maybe a Wilco tire-swing thingy. :notsure:

Also ply wood is tough you can lay that right on the tire. And for when you get sheet rock just buy two extra 2x4’s and lay them right on the tire and Jerry cans to support the sheet rock. It’s always good to have 2x4’s around and if you don’t use them they are cheap enough to chop up into camp kindling wood

Swingout could also get rid of CO2, the tank there and the tire

Yup tank tire and Jerry’s will all be out of the way. Biggest space game changer for me was getting the tire out of the bed

Could easily add those to the tire gate as well. one on each side.

    Damn you guys are fast.

So realistically it's as simple as pop the dust cap, remove the nut, remove the tire, tank and Jerry's, and pull the whole swing out off, right? Then I can run sheetrock/plywood, or haul a bike with the tailgate open? All rare things but things nonetheless. Or just get a cheap landscape trailer like @Chux that can fold up in the garage.

Oh I learned this weekend how important a chain saw can be. I learned it's not just for trees.

I dig this idea as well, especially since I've seen it in action on @HolyHandGrenade and @Wheelspinner 's rigs. I like that it doesn't hang all the weight as far off the back, but I don't like losing additional table space, or overall length in the bed.

Lol I actually am pretty good with an axe when I'm not drunk as fuck. :p

Roof will likely be reserved for solar if anything. Trying to keep the COG of this rig as low as possible. I need it. And my plano cases weigh a fuck ton.

Yeah this is how I did it back in the day. For pieces of 2x4's running from the tool box to the tailgate. Worked really really well.

Yeah if I go swing out, almost everything will be moved to it.

Looking at this setup I'll only get the tire and Jerry's on the bumper I'm okay with keeping CO2 in the bed.

    No.

I wouldn't advise this with a dual bearing swingout. You have to remove the bearings otherwise the lower one isn't sealed. THen you have to make sure they stay clean. Be a bit of a hassle. Idk what the rear of your bumper is like but you might be better off with a double shear bolt one if you plan on that.

If you have two jerry cans, yes only two. Not much room for anything else.

[IMG]FTnBE?-8.jpg by Monte Nickles Photos, on Flickr

CO2 in the bed isn't bad. The best place for it is actually right behind the cab in front of the rear wheel well. Fits perfect there

Wouldn't this be something similar to what Steve is talking about?'

    http://www.4xinnovations.com/Swing-Out-Tire-Carrier-Hinge-Assembly_p_109.html

One big bolt to remove, and the bearings are sealed in the hinge?

Not for me, tool box problems. And I am NEVER getting rid of that thing. I love that thing, and made it an electrical accessory hub. But where I have the CO2 mounted currently still would leave it out of the way even if I added a bed rack eventually. My goal for this truck was always to have options. Trying to keep it that way and keep it low still lol

That's the double shear bolt Monte was talking about towards the end of the post. His beginning post was talking about using a spindle rather a bolt. Which is how most swing-outs are going towards (the spindle compared to double shear IIRC)
