Ticking cant be good right

Self cleaning function on the direct injectors is noisy, that is true. It has nothing to do with cleaning the intake valves though.. the asumptiom is that the Port injectors take care of that. See this article ref the D4S cleaning cycle:

The High Pressure Fuel Pump also likes to Chirp, when mine decides to act up it is most notable near a building or Drive-Thru.

 

Men ticks seemingly all the time. 28k and still going strong.

That's not a tick, at least not a DI tick.

 

If anyone wants a "go" at it, seems like all you need is a rubber damper set between the high pressure pump and the engine block. I'm a biomechanist, not a mechanical engineer. I can understand the paper enough to think it may be effective but don't have the ability to conceptualize the fabrication of the fix. I read it, understand the mechanics of it, and think, let me stick a piece of gum between the fuel pump and the engine block.

But, the pdf is attached in case anyone wants to have a shot at it.

lol, dunno but I listened again...it also sounds like loose exhaust manifold as well.

 

There's a video somewhere here in the forums I just watched a few days ago. One of the designers of the Tacoma Engine was explaining the 2 modes the engine uses (Atkinson/Otto) and it also has a self cleaning function for the injectors (first vehicle to do so) He explains this is the ticking sound you will hear when the engine is idle, as the timing changes a little to push more through the injectors to clean the carbon from them. I was also questionable about the ticking sound, until I watched the video.

Get your flywheel checked. Mine started with that ticking and then the starter began to grind intermittently.

 

That's what direct injection sounds like, for every manufacturer. My Camaro sounded the same. As direct injection becomes the norm in engine technology, people will stop complaining because it will be the new normal.

 

4runners also have the Toyota tick.

 

Mine has this ticking as well. It also has this “vroom.. vroom” sound when I press on the accelerator hard. My bedside decals are also 1mm off when comparing left to right.

Will be taking it to the dealer this weekend.

Toyota quality has definitely gone down hill in the recent years. Should have gotten an SR5 instead of an Off Road, or better yet, a 2nd gen!
