I thought i knew the trail pretty good as well but there so much water it’s changed the trail a bit. Some advice don’t trust the “small” puddles.

That’s so true. Was up there a few weeks ago and a small puddle about swallowed my buddies 4Runner.

When you guys mention skids, do you mean full skids or the stock Toyota skids (1st gen) or the brown one that trails behind me?

Well damn, friends just planned a hike at Pinnacles NM.

I'm on stock skids and 265/70/16 worn highway thread tires (planning to go 265/75 or 255/85 next month), probably better off to skip this trip anyways, would hate to hold up the group.

Does "full skids" mean front/mid/and transfer case skids only or gas tank and rear diff also?

Is it asking too much to include suggested minimums for the trips that get posted on the first page for us noobatrons?

Depends on if you like your gas tank ;)

I believe full skids would include the tank. Basically make sure your whole undercarriage is as protected as possible so you don't poke holes in important components. Patching a gas tank hole on the trail would be..... Interesting at best.

Diff skid isn't necessary (on first gens at least) IMO. A buddy of my says he uses the front of his diff as a ramp if necessary. I would invest in armor for the rear though. That's the weak link as far ad I've been told. The rest of the housing is stout.

the metal on Toyota diff housing is weak as fuck the diff itself isn't. gas tank skid for moderate trails probably not required if your conscious of it . if your on your tank your biggest worry should be your driveline. now if your really doing some heavy rock crawling then it would be smart to have all of the above.

You're talking about the metal on the back of the third member housing, right? I ordered a BTF cover for it. Been waiting for it forever....

I need a skid for my aux tank. It's got a few small dents. I'm just glad they aren't big dents. It's just thin sheet metal.
