How happy are you with the 2.7L 4x4

Go grab a left over '17 4x4 2.7 5 speed manual transmission. I have 1400 miles on mine after this weekend, not a single complaint. Driven in everything from snow and ice on dirt roads and blacktop to a 500 mile highway round trip to drop a kid back at college. The 2018s do not have the 5 speed manual as an option. And mine with the utility package and dealer doc fee was just under $24,400 so it fits in your budget

Bummer thought they finally made it available, V6 in the DCSB puts it over $31K according to the website. Guessing $33K OTD then.

I have had all gens Tacoma. My favorite was my 03 extended cab 3.4v6 5mt 4wd. 18.5 mpg every tank. Fun truck to drive.

Right now I have a 2010 ac 4cyl 4wd 5mt and a 2018 dcsb 6cyl 4wd 6mt.

The 2010 is sitting on 265/75/16s, and plate bumpers front and rear, I get 18-20 just driving it but can baby it and get 21-22 tops. I feel a re gear is needed.

The 18 is all stock. I get 18.5-20 just driving normal.

 

I had a 1st gen 3.4. Totally lost my license for 3 months because of it. It was the trucks fault.

 

Rent one for a week to see if it meets YOUR expectations. Asking people doesn't help....everyone has different expectations and no one knows yours. You will save yourself a big headache if you just rent the truck you are thinking of buying and drive it for a week before committing to a large purchase.

 

I think this is a great idea. Especially for someone going from a car to a truck. Too many threads on here from people going from car to truck and the truck wasn't what they thought it was going to be.

 

I have done that in the past with other manufactures...thought I wanted a Suby Outback at one time, rented one for 2 weeks...hated it by the end of those two weeks. Could not wait to get back in my Tacoma.

Tried renting a 3rd Gen Tacoma, but darn near impossible at least in my area.

 

Its a shame on the highway, but anything else im satisfied.

 

Go for the six. Have had 5 tacos, 2 with the six and four with 2.7 short bed. With 4 wd and the extended cab, be prepared for a dog on the highway with the four The four is actually better off roading being lighter. NO ONE is disappointed in the bigger engine. There are plenty the other way round especially when they get the same mileage. Find a way ! No one can afford a truck they aren’t happy with regardless of the savings.

 

I made a thread when I first bought my 4cyl after having the six stating that the power difference wasnt really noticeable, but the truth is I hadn't been on any road trips, and when I entered hunting season and did multiple long highway trips, the 4cyl is a dog and add in some hills/mountainous terrain and be prepared at struggling to keep speed at or above 70mph, unless you want to be rolling at 5k rpm.

 

I've had my 96 2.7L 4wd manual for just over a year. I love this thing. even with its super shit gearing (3:58) its fine for daily use if you have a good clutch. when I first got the truck I had no idea how spanked my OEM clutch was. 200k. I replaced everything a few months ago and its been great. I live in a pretty hilly area and it has NO problem getting around in any kind of weather.

I am going to regear at some point to 4.88 just for the extra oomph. currently on 265/75/16. want to move to a 35" tire when I get my lift eventually.

I love my '16 SR ACLB AT with LCE header. I chose the AT because a friend smoked the clutch on his towing a too heavy boat. I knew I would be doing the same. If you're mostly on the highway you'll be happier with the 6. I agree with the previous post that the 4 feels more nimble offroad.

Another happy 2.7 SR 5 speed MT owner here. I honestly can't say I've seen anyone who bought the manual 4-banger and was unhappy. I even learned to drive stick for it. But it sounds like you might be stuck getting an auto, if you have to wait. The few 2017s left are going fast.

 

The ‘17 2.7 AT I had was a stalling nightmate so if you go with the 2.7 then get the MT. Can say the ECT made up for it tho. Had to trade it in for the 3.5 V6.
