I've almost 30k miles on my tacoma. Winter months I always get at best 16mpg, summer I'll get about 18-19. A lot of people reporting similar stats. Something about the cold that our trucks tend to burn more fuel. Maybe it's warm up times or something. Pretty normal.

    2WD vs. 4WD ?
You may only drive it in 2WD, but the added weight of 4WD makes it get less MPGs. The OP doesn't say what he has.
I am lucky to get 16 mpg as a daily driver... 14-15 is the new normal with this crap they call gasoline, in California. Highway driving goes up to 17-18 and a bit more if I stay under 70 on flat drives. More also in Mexico using gasoline not diluted with ethanol!

Engines run richer in colder thicker air and like you posted, we tend to let the trucks warm up longer getting 0 mpg while doing so.

Yep, I work less than 10 miles away from home and its all city/ stop and go driving so I don't expect much out of my commutes...happy with 14.5. My S4 used to get about 10-12 in the winter...haha

Is cold air thicker? I always thought summer air was thicker due to the humidity.

Less humidity so its more thin but engines are less efficient in colder temperates---they have to ramp up to get to operating temp and such.

And I start my truck about 10 minutes before we leave with a baby I dont want to stick her into a below freezing truck so even in the garage I warm it up 5-10 minutes before leaving

Just bought my Taco OR stock everything, i'm averaging about 17.5 mpg in New England I keep it under 3k rpm and I have just a little over 100 miles on the truck. I expect the truck to get better mpgs after it breaks in. My Highway driving is around 70 mph with some hills and declines, nothing too crazy.

Not a big change coming from a cross over that got about 23.5 mpg highway.

Heat rises, cold air sinks. Like a hot air balloon. I live in one of the lowest humidity areas of the country, so I forgot to take humidity into account, but high humidity does hurt gas mileage.

getting 18 average on my 17 Tacoma trd sport dcsb. about 20-25 on my 18 odyssey touring. I presume when it warms up and when I get a bed cover it the mpg will get better.

Winter blend of gas doesn't help either. I usually see a 1-2mpg drop in the winter.

I also don't let my truck idle to warm up, I park it in an insulated garage so even on the coldest days it is still 45-50*F in the mornings.

"thicker" is the wrong way to look at it. The density of air changes with temperature. Cold air is more dense than warm air. The more dense air is the more fuel you have to burn to maintain the same air/fuel ratio (mixture). This is why engines perform better in cold air, you effectively have more air. Airplanes fly better in cold air too; the air is more dense. Look up density altitude; as you increase air temperature your are effectively increasing the altitude ... we all know what happens when we go uphill; we have less air therefore less engine performance. Lots of variables here...

What's with all the science in a purely anecdotal conversation. Next we'll be discussing how the OP's mileage is within one SD of the norm and therefore normal.

I took a drive from Portland OR to Redmond OR and back over Mt Hood Sunday and averaged 24.3 mpg. And I was driving it like I stole it! I've got just shy of 9,000 miles on her and she has really settled in on all the transmission learning crap. I'm as happy as a pig in warm mud!

There is a stretch of highway between Arcadia Fl and Fort Myers that's straight and flat with a speed limit of 60mph. I would see 26mpg if I drove between 55-60mph and no wind. Even when I drove at 65-70mph I could still see 21-24mpg.

I'm at about 9000 miles. While it was cold last two weeks I average around 20 mpg. I usually get between 23-25 mpg. I usually drive no higher than 4th at 40, no higher than 5th at 55 and then 6th faster than that for best fuel mileage.

My 13 TRD OR 4x4 gets 17mpg most of the time, an average of city and highway. It is what it is.

Put some 285s on.... great for MPGs! :D

I was getting 19 highway and 16-17 in-town in the summer on stock.

Best I'm getting now is 14.7 MPG

I've got a DCLB 4x4 - I've always thought the 4x4 long bed gets the worst MPG due to the extra length on the bed ...lots of air flowing and creating resistance on that tailgate. Just my best guess tho. Interested to know what other 4x4 Long Beds are getting without a cover.

It can do better. Aggressive driving tanks your MPG. On the other hand...
