Really? Depends on how many wires were damaged. If it’s a few, I wouldn’t worry about splicing them. But if it’s 20... I doubt the guy is gonna solder em all back. It’s gonna be butt connector fiesta under that hood.

I agree with you in principle. But OP has a very good point on future warranty claims as well.

Your solution he's out $200-$300 dollars and the possibility of future warranty claim denials. I know if someone brought in a Tacoma with a bad ECU, electrical problem, short circuit or even failing sensors and we discovered he had spliced the wiring harness by himself.... DENIED. The problem might not even be with the splicing, but it'll sure look that way to anyone diagnosing it.

OPs solution: he's out $500 and doesn't need to worry about any future denial of warranty work.

I get what you're saying about taking apart the dash and he may have more road noise or a new rattle might appear, but thats fixable and all things considered a livable outcome.

There really isn't a correct solution here, both have drawbacks.

You could try one of these amazing anti rodent devices.

It's not under warranty now, so if he splices and it has a fault, it still wouldn't be under warranty. And yes, both have drawbacks.

The rodents chewing the wires aren't under warranty, but my truck has a warranty still - I even have the 7 year extended warranty. I don't want any potential future electrical issues to be tied to splicing the wires back causing them to deny the claim...am I looking at this wrong?

It's not about the future problems as related to wiring, as I'm sure they could fix that under warranty. It's going to possibly be:
    A crooked screen
    A squeak over certain bumps
    Some intermittent light
    etc

There is a crapload of stuff that has to be disassembled in order to install a complete harness. No matter how good the tech is, they are not Toyota plant assembly line.

If there are a few wires only in one spot only under the hood.... that is my point.

Ah I understand now, thank you. That can all be lived with, heck I already have 2 rattles that I've had since owning the truck lol

This has happened to me in the past. I set bait traps in the garage to get rid of the current pests. Next I bought a new seal for the garage door bottom to prevent new rodents from getting in. Maker sure it is sealed from edge to edge, at night you should not be able to see any light coming out. Also, make sure you don't have any food for them in the garage, even grass seed will attract them.

In this garage scenario....Here is a further suggestion...
I got a new garage door seal and the mice kept eating it to get into the garage...
I talked to a guy at a Feed Store and he suggested buying this product that was made to stop horses from chewing on the wooden boards of their stalls...
It's a messy concocktion of stuff like vasoline, but thicker.... and it apparently tastes like shit to horses....

Anywhooo....I bought a tin of it and put on the ends (corners) of the door seal and the buggers have NOT eaten it since.... Need only reapply once/yr.

Just a thought for those garaged Tacos..!!

That stuff does work well, and before going with cayenne pepper powder, I thought about trying anti-cribbing spray (keeps horses from cribbing (chewing) their stalls) on my wires, but the directions on that stuff say “not for putting on metal” so I refrained from using it in my engine compartment. Cayenne has worked very well so far on my engine wires.

For the cayenne doubters. This is my wife's Hyundai engine at the start of fall. This happened 2 nights in a row and I think it was chipmunks. I cleaned this mess out and sprayed degreaser all over the engine to wash off any urine that might attract them back in.

The next morning it was like this again. My Taco was like this after we got back from a trip the following week. I shook cayenne all over both engines and have not had 1 acorn placed under either hood since. Both cars parked outside.

If you go the cat route make sure you take a bedload of pussy with you if you ever go camping. Or a $2 container of cayenne.:)

I have my vehicles Rust protected with Corrosion Free..(similar to Krown/Rust Check)... This stuff stops ALL squeaks/noises from anything rubbing here and there..... ALSO it stops critters from eating your truck.... It tastes like shit....!!

My Corrosion Free guy makes sure he sprays all of the wire harness, as he has seen the damage done by those critters...!!

Seems to work.... Get a can of one of these products and spray yer wires... can't lose ... might save you some $$$

Dude i feel you. I kill about ten of those rat bastards a year around my tacoma. I use rat traps my cat and my dog loves to kill them. I like the cayenne pepper trick going to try that. Also go around find there nests and do your business.i enjoy killing them. We have the Norwegian wood rats. They look like a chinchilla. Good luck. Try tomcat traps easy to set.

[IMG] These traps work great for chipmunks. A little peanut butter on a cracker gets them every time. They make smaller ones for rats also, but I haven't tried them. We currently don't have a rat problem.

Re-splice the wires like others have said, color code the wire, use shrink wrap connectors then good plastic flex covering, should work...

agree..i do not think there are 20 wires but in any case splice with in line splice crimp, add heat shrink after then good electrical tape done.
