I don't have any personal experience with the 2.4, but as far as I know all the tacoma motors are pretty reliable.

Well i have a 1st gen 99 tacoma. 2.4 l. And a 2007. 2.7 l. Tacoma. My 99 has 142.000 miles and my 2007 has over 380.000 on it .they both run and drive great . but for me the 2.4 with a 5 sp . and a cold air intake . will smoke a v8 in the eigthth of a mile . my 2.7 is a automatic . but still hauls ass . but my 99 will eat anything off the line . as for swaping moters noyou cant . unless you swap the wiring harnesses . wznna race .anyone . dont be bitches . race titles

The 2.4 2rz and the 2.7 3rz share all the same parts but the blocks are different, the 2.7 has balance shafts and a longer stroke, so the rods, crank, and pistons are different also. Theres a thread on customtacos where a guy swaped his 2.4 for a 2.7 and used the 2.4 wire harness and ecu.

Why is it that NOBODY has mentioned that the 2.4L is of 2 valve construction, and the 2.7L engine is of 4 valve construction, giving it much better breathing for intake and exhaust. It develops more horsepower quicker than the 2.4 even begins to think about giving squat! To put a 2.4 liter engine in place of a 2.7 would be about the dumbest thing you could possibly do, besides not putting oil in it.

Uhhhh, the 2.4L 2rz-fe engine has 4 valves per cylinder, just like the 3rz-fe. You may be confusing that with the older 22r or 22re motors, or possibly the 2rz-e motor which was never put in Tacomas here.

I agree the head for a 2rz and 3rz are the same.
