Even when properly calibrated, the ABS will sometimes try to kill you. Mine is currently not working, and I've grown to like it. I wouldn't mind getting back the TRAC feature, but I'm liking not having the truck drive for me every time a tire slips. Good tires are the key.

    ABS Problems

My mother purchased her 2015 Tacoma TRD brand spanking new 2 years ago with 7 miles until last month, December 2017 (12K miles). She was going downhill in a residential area. She only accelerated to get the truck going upon starting the engine. Unfortunately for her, she was unable to stop until she hit a wall. Some of the readers may laugh and say why would she do that, where did she get her license, etc. it was either that or hit possible pedestrians or other drivers. Good thing she only had broken ribs, this could have been much worse. The part that is crazy is her insurance company considers this her fault and refuses to provide a copy of their “inspection report”. Claiming it is proprietary information. ABS is dangerous.

I advise anyone that is thinking of making a purchase to consider the problems that comes with these vehicles and ABS.

The ABS has been reported to kick in in low traction off road situations, with similar effects. I've experienced it on icy roads. In a sense, the ABS did what it was designed to do. She was able to avoid the pedestrians while sliding and chose to hit the wall instead. Good to hear the other safety features did their job and she's okay.

Part that is crazy insurance rules she is at fault. Can someone explain to me how an ABS problem would result in the driver being at fault? Just trying to understand how that would be logical.

There are too many unknown variables to answer that. If the hill was icy, then technically the ABS system did it's job - allowing her to steer while the vehicle was sliding. The problems I've experienced and that I've read about have all occurred in "less than safe" or not "recommended" driving situations, like sheer ice on road, and snow or mud on very steep descents. The truck seems to accelerate because of the pulsing of the brakes, rather than the wheels just stopping. Again, this is how the system is designed to work. The issue is exacerbated by firmly applying the brakes. A soft foot on the brake pedal actually gives you more control, and even the ability to stop, in most of these situations.

Step 1: Remove ABS actuator and ABS LED's in dash.

Step 2: Re-plumb brake lines and add proportioning valves.

Step 3: Be happy and enjoy a nice firm pedal and smooth braking.
