I may have to give this a shot, I haven't specifically heard pings or anything but the power delivery could be interesting.

I can't wait to do my own changes to get better intervals on the oil.

 

Its not about mpg. All the premium does is contain higher octane rating which prevents detonation. More resistance to detonation means more timing the engine can run, which can equate to the engine outputting it's max power, which may in turn lead to better mpg as depending on driving style.

I noticed it especially when I had the FJ loaded up with 2 giblets, giant ass soccer mom roof top cargo box, 140# dog, wife, and all their shit. Under load mine is much happier with premium. Loading up the wife's t4r similarly doesn't seems to effect it while running 87.

 

I'd just find one in the south or out west, fly out and drive it back. I would definitely not get one locally.

I think it's because of the custom tuning. It's tuned to generate maximum power so, when hooked up to a trailer, it does exactly what it's supposed to but at the cost of fuel consumption. I haven't tried running premium for normal driving. It ran great with premium towing the trailer, just not worth the extra expense as it does fine towing with 87 also.

If you’re motor doesn’t require premium to prevent detonation then running premium actually results is a lower MPG as lower octane fuel is essentially more energy dense per unit of measure. Octane rating is counter intuitive and makes you think you’re getting a better product with a higher rating but really the only thing that makes premium fuels better is usually the gas is mixedwith alcohols and detergents to achieve its octane rating which can help keep injectors/valves a tad bit cleaner but on a motor that only needs 87 running 93 will actually net you less MPG
