Any woodworkers?

I got a head start as my dad is also a woodworker and he helped me get some of the stuff. He built a large amount of furniture in our first home and I want to do the same in mine.

 

That's how I got into it. It's good to see younger people getting I to it. It seems like a little bit of a lost art form.

 

Yeah, which is sad. Where I'm from in CA it seems like there is a big demand for custom woodwork too. It's not my job but I think about it being my job a good amount.

 

With all the dead trees we have too should be no problem finding pine, I fell about 100 trees last year myself :/

 

Yeah, its been a bummer these last few years for that.

Hole saws are for construction purposes. Get forsner bits for sure. I recommend freud if you can afford it.

Forstner bits for the win. The issue i have with hole saws, is that if you drill the whole way through, getting the plug out of the bit can be a pain. When i need to use a hole saw, I've started drilling halfway from one side, then finishing on the other side, which leaves a little bit of the plug exposed so you can grab with a pliers/vice, but even then its not always easy, plus sometimes you cant do that.

 

You got it figured out but I think it depends on the application. If you are cutting holes for electrical or plumbing go with a hole saw and spade bits. if you are doing holes for fine wood working like furniture or boxes etc use the forstner bits.

I prefer bradpoint bits up to 5/16” then fornester bits. Id also look into those fancy Vic’s bits (self centering) are very handy for hardware installation.

 

Practice on scrap wood first!

 

I do have one of those for drilling 5.5" deep holes in my roubo style workbench for dog/holdfast holes. They eat through wood, like nothing else.

 

Dang that’s a thick bench. When I glued up mine I put a smaller piece 3” rather than 5” to have less to drill.
