Suggestions on a lift kid for a 2017 TRD OR

Hi, first of all new to the forum so any help is appreciated up front. I have a 2017 Tacoma TRD OR and am looking at doing a small lift kit. I’m looking at the:

Then changing out the rims to a 17” and getting beefier tires.

Can anyone offer any ideas, good or bad or suggestions?

So many people dont do there own research on this topic it blows my mind. Just get the rough country kit you found if you dont want to research

I would do a 6 inch rough country lift, with 1.5 inch blocks and 1 inch spacers. Don’t forget 285 ko2s.

Almost afraid to say after looking through all the research provided, maybe I am being unrealistic. I’m not very mechanicaly inclined so I will need to have whatever done in a shop that’s why I was looking at a kit. Anyways I wanna change to larger tires and 17” rims I was hoping to do a 3” front 2” back what I believe is called a “leveling kit” in say a $1500 Range. If it’s not possible then I’ll just upgrade the tires and leave the rims at the 16s they came with.

 

Is that $1500 including tires or is it just the lift?

 

For the lift.

 

Just get the rough country kit you found...a shop is going to charge about 300$ to install that plus the cost of the kit. Since you have no idea about your truck and just want it lifted alittle and have to get a shop to do it then i would strongly recommend doing something simple

Why do you want to lift it?

Do you want the "bro" look, or do you plan to actually offroad with it? (seriously, be honest here) Not knocking the "bro look" (okay, maybe I am a little, lol), but be honest withyourself if you just want it for looks, or actual performace. If you want to go off road AND want the "look", be careful - there are many lifts out there that look cool, but would likely get destroyed on fire roads.

For the "bro look": by all means, get the 6" lift, then lift blocks and spacers too. Make sure you roll 20's, and throw some 315's on it, at least...

But if you want to off road with it: Seriously, go off road with it - as is. You have an off road model. That's what it's made for (at least according to the stickers)....

Then once you've cut your teeth in the dirt and gained some driving skills, maybe consider some new more aggressive and slightly larger tires (think about how much you go off roading vs. street driving), and maybe a small lift - but really, no more than 3". For tires, most people don't need more than a 33". I'm personally looking at 255/85's (the so called pizza cutter).

You can get a set of 4 Bilstein 5100 shocks (fronts are height adjustable) and an add-a-leaf in the rear for like $500. This or a set OME coils, shocks and add-a-leafs are by far the most popular suspension upgrade for these trucks all the way back to best gens, I mean 1st gens. They offer a bit of a lift, and a good performance gain over even the TRD bilstein shocks. I ran this setup (5100's) for 6 years before I eventually upgraded to mid-travel Kings and UCAs, I don't regret it at all.

Remember, you don't "need" a lift to fit bigger tires (there's a guy here who has 35's at basically stock height, but this = ). And ideally, (for off road) you want to keep the MINIMUM lift possible (for a low center of gravity). Choose your tires for ground clearance and traction, then lift and trim the fenders to fit them.

With the 5100's or the OME lifts, it's pretty much a DIY as long as you know how to turn a wrench, and you can rent the tools at most auto parts stores for free.

I know throwing a bunch of money at your truck certainly sounds more fun, but IMO, this is your best chance for success and long term enjoyment...

 

Get the OME (Old Man Emu) lift kit. It comes with everything you need, is good quality, and gives about a 2" lift. I think it is right around your range. That's what i am looking at for the future.
