NC legal tint is 35% front windows, nothing on windshield below the AS1 line, and rear windows/rear windshield can be dark as you like.

I personally had my front windows matched to my truck's rear window/back window privacy glass.

As for inspections with non-legal tint, that's usually not too hard. Just don't be a dumbass and put the inspector on the spot - ask him privately about your situation and accept whatever his decision is. You may have to shop around in your area before you find a shop you can come to an arrangement with.

As for not getting busted by the cops, once again, not being a dumbass goes a long way. Don't drive like a fucking maniac. Don't do stupid shit like rolling your windows all over the place when the cop is around. If he does pull you, do what any normal human being would do...drop your driver's side window, be polite as hell, and hope he's in a good mood. If he pulled you for tint in the first place, you're not getting out of it.

Recognize folks, if you have non-legal mods to your vehicle (tint, clearcorners, long tubes, whatever), you're running the risk. If you get caught, suck it up. If you can't afford the fines, don't do the mod.

Not sure if this is true but I was told that part of the officers performance review is based on how many ticket he wrote which pretty much equates to a quota.

i've heard that quotas are non existent now BUT if a police officer pulls over, say 10 people a day and only gives 2 tickets in that day, his Sergent will pull him aside and tell that officer to ticket more..

Not sure how accurate that is, because the rear side and back window of the 2nd gen Taco come tinted to about 28% from factory...

Edit: Yeah, looked it up, and you can have whatever you want on the rear windows and back windshield:

Well, I spoke to a cop about tints in CA, and he said its not as much the fact that its dark, its more the fact that you are putting a film over the glass, and in the case of an emergency the glass doesn't shatter properly and crumble into safe pieces like it would without the film. That's why driver shouldn't, also the vision of the driver. When you think about it, it makes sense, but yeah tints look sick!

i've heard that a few times.. i dunno how true it really is, BUT it makes sense. The tint i applied makes it so you can see me, but its enough to be helpful in san diego weather

I'd never allow anyone to tell me that I have to destroy my truck. I didn't stop completely at a stop sign, pleaded a bit, he was cool and gave me a tint ticket instead of a moving violation. At first I stressed, then realized it was just worth paying the $124 to leave it alone. My buddy said he'd redo it for free, but I decided it wasn't worth the hassle for me or my bro. I bent over for them again, and like usual, they used no vasaline.

yeah, it was $175 for me (got it in Anza Borrego) and the guy i got everything done through charged me $60 to un-tint and re-tint. so 25+60 = less than $175 :D

I was told that as well. The only thing that makes me doubt that is that it's legal to put clear film designed to reduce UV rays according to the law. It would have the same effect in holding the window together.

I believe it only has to test at 32%... they give you a little bit of slack (for inspection). I have 35% in front and 5% over the factory tint in the rear.

Yup. The light tint i applied is light enough where it helps keep sun glare out and at night, keeps my side view mirrors from blinding me, but light enough to see me clearly inside. Before you couldnt see my steering wheel, now you can easily. I think it should be ok now... we'll see
