Help me identify this leak near left rear wheel area

Hm. I always look forward to the odor of gear oil. For some reason it reminds me of how diesels smelled back in the day. I can’t stand the smell of atf. It smells of mystery and danger.

 

I'd see this as a blessing I have 6112s and 5160s going in soon. Can't wait.

 

I figured that was the case since diesel now is ULSD, and gear oil smells like sulfur. I’m a diesel tech and I didn’t know that for sure. Typical.

 

So op, I take it that they are only replacing the shock that us leaking?

 

That's my understanding.

 

Just got off the phone with the service tech. He indicated that he got me confused with another customer and he was referring to the re-torquing of the rear diff.

FWIW I found out today that the dealership I go to has 50 bays. They can service 150 cars per day!

Also if I go there in the middle of the week I can just show up with no appointment. Mid-week is not busy but Fri-Mon is a zoo over there apoarently.

I'm not sure I want to test the "no appointment" thing though. But 50 bays sounds like a big operation. One tech/mechanic could have several cars going on simultaneously.

 

can't speak to your situation but one of the main advantages to setting appointments is that you can build a relationship with a single service writer. that can prove to be worth quite a bit of you ever need it, just by having someone actually look you in the eye and listen to you. and know your name... helps get things done.

Great point. I've always called the same service rep. He's usually impressive with his knowledge and explains things well. Except for today...he seemed to be off a bit. He works 9-7 each day he comes in. That's a long day but it's probably the nature of the car business. Plus he used to be a tech. The other guys I've talked to don't have that background.

 

If you can afford, buy a good set of shocks and ask the to replace both of them for you.

 

I'll probably do that in the near future. Just buy the parts and find out how much their installation fee would be.

I don't mind being in OEM shocks right now. Unless they go out again!

Got the shock replaced. Looks new and looks good. It better not leak!

FWIW these shocks are Hitachi...

 

I can't believe Toyota is still using Hitatchi after the price fixing scandal.

 

I've been trying to find what new Hitachi shocks go for. Haven't come across the price for new ones but everybody and their step uncle seems to be selling used one's on ebay.
