Best Dash Cam for Taco

I recently got into an accident where a dash cam would have really saved my butt! My claim is currently being processed, my tacoma is out of commission for 3 weeks...

Ironically about 3 weeks before this incident someone backed into my truck... My buddy told me to get a dash cam and I brushed him off and said I would when I had time. I have only had my truck since November.

Well, Murphy's law right? I had a traffic incident which is very difficult to explain but if I had a dash cam I would be in the clear.

I have been doing research since my tacoma has been in the shop(because what else am I gonna do...) and I think I am going to get the Rexing (

I have been recommended the blackvue (

I was wondering if any of you ladies or gents who drive your truck for work a lot and have some experience with dash cams would be able to chime in?

My wife and I like the Thinkware series of dash cams currently run the x500 w/ rearview camera, Sony cmos sensor, it uses a super capacitor instead of a battery, has parking mode, and really good night time capture (list of features). Had a similar situation with the wife told her in November we should get a dash cam she thought it would be a waste of money and we would never need it. Then week before Christmas wife was driving home from work, at night, while it was snowing and some guy covered in snow driving without his lights on rear ended her pushing her into the curb and drove away. She was shaken up and the car needed a lower control arm, wheel, wheel cover and upper shock mount. After that she insisted we have the dash cam. Amazon link X550 (new version)

@Stewbuff may I ask why you and your wife opted for the x series rather than the F series? There does appear to be some price difference but not much. I saw these two on Amazon and although they are a fair bit more than the Rexing I was originally planning to buy the parking feature does seem super nifty. Do you run the parking feature on yours? Have you noticed significant battery draw if so?

 

Price was a big reason for purchase, at the time of purchase (3 years ago) Sams club was doing a deal $180+tax which included the rear camera and 32gb micro sd. This did not include the

hardwiring kit and you need that for the parking mode(25ish bucks). The camera has an internal voltage monitor and you can change the voltage in the options before the camera shutdowns. The camera is in our Sentra and my wife gets a about 8-10 hours of parking mode at the mall she works at (lots of motion) with a shutdown voltage of 12v I think, but our model doesn't have time lapse just motion and impact detection.

 

I use the 1080p version. Local Walmart had it for $50. I like that it has wifi, makes pulling footage easy while on the go.

I have the older Blackvue DR450 cams in my truck and also in my wife's SUV. They are still working great after 4 years. I have purchased other cheaper cams on Amazon or Ebay for my other family members to use, and they all failed after a year or so. The biggest enemy to these dashcams is the heat inside the cab and them being directly exposed to sunlight most of the time. The cheaper ones just can't survive that type of beating everyday.

What I like about the Blackvue is that I can buy extra bracket and power cord and just stick them in another vehicle. When needed, I can just pull the cam and move it to another vehicle. I don't drive away in any of my vehicle without a dashcam.

The newer Blackvue are expensive because they all come with 2 cameras. If you don't need recording at the rear, then you can look for the older models that are much cheaper.

 

thanks man I saw this when I did my search and originally I wasn't too keen on the thinkware/blackvue ones...but now I'm warming up to them a little bit more. I'm still not convinced by the blackvue lol

@Blandino dude that is nuts it looks like you are flying a spaceship! Or like you are a dbz character lol. I'll look into these! How long have you had it?

 

I just googled that image because I'm at work. I don't run the ODB sensor and all that craziness. I have GPS speed, map overlay, and that is it. There are hundreds of different overlay options you can use for the gmetrix data the unit collects. Also, I can turn it on or off with my garmin wristband. So far it has only been nice for hiding it and remotely turning it on to record pranks. It broadcasts wifi and you can verify it is aiming properly with a live camera feed on your phone. Can also adjust settings such as resolution, digital image stabilization, zoom, fps, etc. At the track I use a slightly different overlay. It collects all the data regardless if you want it or not. Then you use an editor and you can just have plain video, or put whatever stats you want up.

The only other cameras I've used to compare it to is a gopro and a mobius, and they don't come close to the garmin.

These are all great thank you guys! Has anyone wired one themselves? I'm located in Los Angeles and if I can't do it myself I don't mind having a shop do it if anyone has any recommendations?

I am driving a Ram 1500 rental in the mean time...it doesn't drive too bad but I wish I had my truck back...

on the other hand though it does make me feel both happy and sad I got a tacoma instead of a tundra lol

 

Not sure how a true dash cam works, but the Garmin everything is wireless. Plug a little ODBII gadget in the port and it sends data over bluetooth. GPS and other motion sensors are built in. For continuous recording a dash cam would probably be a little more convenient. When my garmin is full I have to use my phone or the front panel and format the SD card. There is probably a setting that overwrites itself when full, but I usually export it to a hard drive once every few days before it can fill up. One thing I like is the heart rate monitoring you can add to videos. Can watch your HR spike when you take a spill at the track or trail riding.

I have the one in OP. I don't have the time to write up a full review, but I can tell you the reviews on Amazon are on point. That camera is worth more than what they charge for it.

I've had mine for about 8 months. I highly recommend it.

 

I have a Rexing dash cam my biggest complaint is it doesn’t seem to keep the date and time so it needs to be reset much more than I would like.

 

when I was picking a dash cam I spent forever looking at reviews and spec sheets. I went with the Thinkware F750 with the optional rear camera and hard wired it in using their kit. It is low profile so it hides behind your rear view mirror and doesn't distract you from driving like the cheap camera hanging from the wind shield. It has good optics so day or nite it is still very clear. It will take up to a 64 gb micro SD card which is enough for about 6.5 hours of continuous recording. the feature that I really like is the Red light camera warring very helpful for avoiding tickets.

I did a good bit of online research on these. I currently have an EPrance 2 channel which just died on me, the EPrance is a cheap dash cam but it was my first. I am in the group buy and ordering the BlackVue. It has features that, for me and my needs, are unnecessary but I can live with them and may be of benefit in the right circumstance. The camera does not have a screen, which I like because its a distraction while driving and it is also low profile. It has bluetooth/wifi which transmits directly to your smart phone for instant playback if needed. The Thinkware has the same features with a little different picture quality.
