I'm seriously considering it for purposes of downsizing the fleet a little bit. Right now the GF and I have 5 cars for 2 people, on 3 different insurance policies. So it seems like every month something needs the registration renewed, or the insurance is due for the year. Add the boat into the mix and I've got vehicle registrations due in January, March, April/May, and September. And car insurance bills that come due in March, June, and September.
Then the GF has the registration for her Mustang in July and her Rav4 in October, with the insurance on those due in August.
It's not that most of them are overly expensive, but constantly having a bill due for a vehicle is starting to grate on my nerves
So if I traded the F150 for a 2500 I'd get a plow and a slide-in bedliner for it, use it as a DD and a work truck and sell the '84. Moving to a 2500 I'd take a bit of a hit mpg-wise, but if I got a diesel it'd be minimal.

On the other hand, I'd be going from a 1 year old truck (two model years) to one that's almost 10. :notsure:

What's in the 'nocket? Sled trip?

For a well cared Duramax, 10 years old is nothing. And you don't sound like the kind of guy that gives a shit about bluetooth or LED map lights or any of that fancy stuff. Of course you 'll have to set it up for your plow too, right? That won't be cheap.

Yep, gonna give it a go this weekend. Riding in NH is all but done unless I go to Pittsburg and it's reciprocal weekend. With VT having almost zero rideable snow, Pittsburg is going to look like Mumbai India during rush hour, all weekend long. Even Millinocket might be rough but at least I know how to get lost up there.

Honestly I'd buy a new plow. If I'm bothering to upgrade trucks I'll upgrade to a new plow as well. Something in a V, but I'd have to do some research into whether I wanted a Fisher or a Boss. Besides, a lot of the value of that old Dodge is the fact that it comes with a plow, so if I sold it I'd sell it with the plow included. :notsure:

Make sure you keep that foot warm. Supposed to be a good weekend, though, temperature-wise. Upper 30's/40's here, which probably translates to right around the freezing mark for Millinocket.

True, but a new F250 with a diesel is $50-55k for an XLT and I'm not interested in that. They're also massive and ugly

Edit-Plus, they've all got all sorts of emission crap and I'm not interested in that, either.

Yeah, and I don't know how they work it in ME, but if you are concerned with all those registration and insurance fees... on a new F250- OMG. Even my Sierra with a $49k sticker was about $800 to reg. and my insurance went up a bunch. You said you have 3 payments for insurance.. you can't do a monthly? I have the same payment all year, sleds, boats, trailers, home. I like the same payment each month.

The reg on my $43K MSRP F150 is over $1000 a year, because Maine is getting almost as bad as Taxachusetts. On a new F250 I'm sure I'd be pushing $2k

As for the insurance, it's because I've got insurance through different companies, so different policies. The F150 and the '84 are through Providence (same as my house), the '69 is through Hagerty, and the boat is thru Progressive because they were half the price of Providence. And I get a "paid in full" discount on all three that saves me about $500 a year so I don't want to go to a monthly on them.

Oh damn! I thought NH was bad. I have to check with State Farm to see if they have a paid in full discount! I get discounts for auto drafts and multi-policies.

Yeah, it's ridiculous. Maine's Excise tax is .0240 for the first year, .0175 for the second year, and they drop more slowly from there. An F250 equipped how I'd want has an MSRP of around $58k, so the first year it'd be $1400 in registration. Not as bad as I thought, but still more than I'd want to pay. Whereas for an older vehicle the rate is .0040, so I'd be paying a LOT less

Yeah, we'll see. If I show up and the frame has the usual GM rust I'll be out. But if it's still got the factory coat of wax/paint/Michigan snot on there I'll seriously consider it because I can keep the rust out with fluid film if it hasn't established a beachhead yet. Truck only has 65k on it, so mechanically it's barely broken in.

Yeah, I got edumacated about that when I went to have my truck Linexd. I wanted them to do fluid film too but he said they can't until about a year because the factory stuff reacts bad with it? Well the factory stuff must suck pretty bad because I already see rust on the rear cross members for the frame. It's a big, open tube steel that you can see right by the wheel, fucking rusted already before my first oil change:facepalm:

Probably just the welds, right? Absurdly common on the GM frames.

Yeah, understandable. Before you fluid film it you can always just sand/wire wheel them down and slap some paint on them, I guess. But it is silly that you'd have to do that on a brand-new truck.

The surface rust on the welds isn't a huge deal anyway; the slag in the welds rusts a lot more readily.
