I purchased my Tacoma in September 2009. Automatic transmission. I have 1,300 miles on it. It still has a strange burning rubber smell from the engine area after driving it. There is no visible smoke. I had it looked at at the Toyota Dealership where I purchased it. They couldn't find anything wrong (such as a plastic bag caught in the engine area). The only comparison I can make is the smell after an oil change (spilled oil on the manifold during oil change). I know I don't have that many miles, but after 7 months, should it still smell that way? The oil is still from the day the factory installed it. Synthetic oil.

Make sure the filter is tight. This is the only thing I can think of that is near the exhaust.

if oil is hitting the exhaust or engine, you should be losing some or at least be able to see some drops somewhere. It could be hitting the cross pipe under neath by transfer case. Check under there as well.

7 months and only 1300 miles is the problem.
I bought mine around the same time and had that many miles in less than a month.;)
I remember it took a little over a month for any burn in smells to go away.
Take that thing out and get it warmed up!:D

If you smell that from your trans you are burning clutch material.

Just a thought but the trans check the trans fluid level if your low you may be burning your clutches.

The burning smell is because your engine is still new. Every new car/truck does this. It's a coating on the engine parts that keep them clean until you take delivery of your new vehicle. That way if the vehicle sits on the lot for 6 months the engine doesn't get all rusty and seized up. Just drive it and eventually it will go away. Sometimes I get used cars where I work that have 13,000 miles and they still make the smell. Don't worry, unless you see smoke coming from under the hood.:D
