    Strange that this thread pops up. Just the other day, I was discussing the 2.5 Boxer Motor (turbo) in the 1st Gen. I had a Subaru Legacy GT once and that motor would be BOSS in the first gen (IMHO). I even started researching. Problem(s) is/are: I lack the skills/knowledge/connections.

    Out of curiosity, what's the issue with the flat/boxer engines? As opposed to say a rotary engine?

    wouldn't do that either haha NO torque in a rotary. Had a friend that had an 87? or 88 rx7. Was a cool car. TO get it moving you reved to 4k haha granted they rev to like 9k but still...just no torque. Not gonna be good in a tacoma, too heavy.

    Boxers without a good overhaul blow up. The 2.0 was terrible for this and the 2.5 was better....but still would go if not taken care of and if you tried pushing the power on a stock block you were asking for it.

    Plus i would never put a lower displacement motor in a tacoma then it already has. the 2.7 is low enough. Turbos are the key to making up displacement yes....but they still aren't a true replacement for displacement. Can't beat the torque.

    Any turbo motor worth swapping in is a 2jzgte. Not just for the cool factor but also because it will literally bolt up to the r150f. which is practically the same as an r154 that supras came with. Get smooth torque of a straight 6, keep your oem 4wd. Get the right 2jz and it'll make over 300hp STOCK. Upgrade the twins and you can push up to almost 400 easily. Be plenty in a taco. But....2jz and mods for a 2jz...BIG $$$$.

    RAT products did a Tacoma body swap onto a dodge diesel. He had to shorten the dodge frame a bit. I looked for the thread but couldn't find it (I didn't look very hard)

    I still cannot figure out how these guys pass smog. Forgive me as I'm deep in the heart of smog-nazi heaven. How does a vehicle that has a 4 or 6 cylinder in its VIN get past a visual?

    I asked the same question. @Timmah! helped someone do a Tundra v8 conversion on a 3rd gen 4runner, and they live in the Bay Area. You have to use all the donor vehicle's SMOG and emissions equipment and get it approved by a BAR referee. He explains it somewhere in this video series.

    I don't think it would carry the weight of a 7.3L. You'd have to beef up the entire truck to carry it around. If i was going to swap something in, it would be an LS motor. Easy to find and lots of aftermarket support for swaps.
