"Like a Cadillac." "As if it had legs." I smell advanced MotoGP style electronic traction control stuff going on, both brake and engine output.

I know it's hard to believe, but the way these non OR and Pros climb hills and the smoothness makes me think about ALSD in 4LO only. They keep so much a secret, I wouldn't be surprised!!!

I tested ALSD in reverse. It was smooth and alls I heard was a tone, no break noise.

The "ol adage, when in doubt throttle out, is a thing of the past with these advanced systems.

All kinds of neat videos out there. Disregard any center differential torque distribution; same strategy.

I have a 2010... there is no quick press in H4... nothing happens... see the documents I posted that say this as well. In 2012, TRAC OFF quick press was added in H4.

    [EDIT, in 4Lo please]

No worries! That is one of my biggest problems. So easy, but so much trouble!

My plan for Saturday to drive around until I find a loading ramp and get you the rest of the spreadsheet.

Ok, I attempted a VSC braking and throttle intervention test. I definitely got braking firing on the test, but never got bad enough to get throttle control. So it definitely doesn't cut the throttle until trying braking or maybe gets really bad (As @tonered noted).

However before I got thru the test matrix, truck got pissed at me. Fail safe for accelerometer and rate gyro fail I assume.
Fixed by just taking it down, power cycle, and driving it around.

Back to the drawing board. (Still hoping we get some diagonal tests or jack tests from some others soon, because I won't feel we have proven it all beyond a shadow of a doubt until then...)

Okay okay okay. I think I finally understand what you are saying and how yall got there. That document on page 9 is for 2009-2011 models yes?

Here's what I think happened, correct me if I'm wrong. 2009-2011 models had only 2 modes in 4HI. You can confirm this because you have a 2010.
    1. Default 4HI which was TRAC and VSC on but there was no engine regulation (note 4)
    2. 4HI TRAC OFF and VSC OFF.

You get to mode 2 by holding the VSC button and single pressing the VSC button does nothing.

Then for 2012+ someone reported that you can now single press the VSC button and get into 4HI TRAC OFF mode. As in only the TRAC OFF light is lit on the dash. So now for 2012+ there are 3 modes in 4HI.
    1. Default 4HI which was TRAC and VSC on (full TRAC with engine regulation)
    2. 4HI TRAC OFF and VSC ON (new mode)
    3. 4HI TRAC OFF and VSC OFF

Yeah? For whatever it's worth this is identical to the 3rd gens.

Now here's where the confusion comes in. I think yall interpreted this new 4HI TRAC OFF mode to be equivalent to the TRAC OFF mode described in that 2009-2011 triangle chart. Seems reasonable but I think it's an inaccurate conclusion. I believe that the TRAC OFF mode in that triangle is for 2wd only for all model years and my reasoning is because ALSD is on. I think in 2012 they did not add that TRAC OFF ALSD ON mode to 4Hi. What they did was change 4Hi default to include engine regulation but in addition allow the user to turn TRAC completely off (removing both LSD and engine regulation) with a single press. I don't think ALSD has ever been on in 4Hi. They would have illuminated the light if it was. Admittedly though the 4Hi default mode in 2009-2011 was very similar to ALSD. TRAC minus engine regulation after all is basically ALSD.

Yes, you have it correct for 2009-2011.
However, all the 2012 owners I spoke to here confirmed that to get the stronger TRAC (without engine regulation) they now had to hit the button quickly and the TRAC OFF light came on. That confirmed (to me) that Toyota made TRAC universal in 2WD and 4WD and also matched TRAC OFF in 2WD (also called AUTO LSD) with the new TRAC OFF in 4WD. It was logical... ?

The stronger TRAC OFF MODE (TRAC on with engine regulation off) is noticeably more capable than without the regulation. I see no logic in denying 3rd Gens from having the better H4 mode.

    Keep on with your research.

Fair point, that makes sense. Here's why it's not logical to me though. The lights on the dash. If TRAC and TRAC OFF both became equivalent in 2wd and 4wd which does seem like a logical path forward why are the lights completely different in said modes? If TRAC OFF in 4Hi was identical to the 2wd "TRAC OFF ALSD" mode then 4Hi TRAC OFF should show ALSD and the VSC Off light on under 30 just like it does in 2wd. But it doesn't. Further in ALSD mode notice the TRAC OFF light is not lit. To me they did this because in that mode TRAC isn't off. TRAC Off light means no traction control and when you have ALSD you have traction control so its not lit. 4Hi TRAC OFF does not line up with that. Not only is the ALSD light not on the TRAC OFF light is. They blatantly screwed up the indicator lights if the proposed mode yall seem to have discovered actually exists. And as far as 3rd gen testing goes, it doesn't exist for us.

I will have to carefully review your message before I can agree/disagree.

I can say that in my 2017 OR auto, whenever the 'TRAC-OFF' light is lit, I get no brake based simulated limited slip differential. Whenever that light is out, I get the brakes firing on the spinning wheel when I jacked my LH wheels in the air.

That light 100% correlated in all cases to traction control vs no traction control for me.
(That light is on default for 2hi and 4hi, and off by default in 4Lo). That is NOT the light sequence that sr/etc are showing.

Yep yep all sounds good. The SR/etc are different than the ORs in 4Lo. They get TRAC in 4Lo while we get A-TRAC and MTS instead.

And are we pretty sure that the TRAC-OFF light works the same across all trims all modes by now ? Because if so, that is the one big improvement for 3rd gen.

I would say so but others may debate it. All testing I have heard here seems to indicate that TRAC OFF on 3rd gens means the TRAC system is off. This means no LSD and no engine regulation short of VSC kicking in if its on. In other words no traction control. And as far as I've heard this applies across all models in an identical manner.

Does Toyota no longer equate AUTO LSD with TRAC OFF?

TRAC is a mode rather than short for Traction Control.

TRAC OFF means the mode 'TRAC' is OFF and something else is on, instead.

Seems to be either when there is more traction control (ie. no engine regulation) or when there is no traction control (ie. VSC is OFF).

Well, a big change. We sure need a chart like we had in 2009 to confirm.

AUTO LSD/TRAC OFF was always a 2WD ONLY mode. I agree the name should have been applied in 4WD HIGH, too... instead of calling it TRAC OFF only (after 2012).
Seems their marketing or translation staff and the engineering staff have a hard time being on the same page?
