There was a drum or lube like that shipped to that nature preserve stand-off thing last year when they asked the public for supplies to help them stay.

It takes an INSANE amount of electricity to operate a desalinization plant. There is also a significant investment in filtration infrastructure. Not sure if South Africa has the money, inclination, or political will to make that happen.

Why not solar then? Maybe they'll just Amazon up a bunch of bottled water. Hope they have prime.

No way for me to comment on that without getting political. I loved South Africa when I lived there and it will always have a special place in my heart, I’ll just leave it at that.

Not enough juice. The desalinization plant we got our water from in Saudi had it's own gas-fired power plant. Just for it.

    It's nuts.

Hope something good happens for those folks. Tough break - shit's about to get all Mad Max down there.

That is indeed the WTF. There was a city here in VA that accidentally contaminated their own water supply by spilling fuel oil into the river at their water intakes. The water company had a limited reserve on hand, and as long as residents conserved water, they could likely resolve the situation and get back up and running without much interruption. As soon as the city provided this info to the public and asked citizens to conserve water as much as possible (providing instructions for doing so), they saw water useage increase 4 fold because people started filling bathtubs, buckets, and any containers they could get their hands on. Consequently the reserve was used up before the issue could be resolved and the city had to shut off the water supply for several days.

Many people just have a very hard time seeing the big picture.

Glad I live in Maine, but I still water my gardens with collected rainwater rather than pump it out of my well. When I build I'd like to design a large cistern for rainwater collection right into the foundation plans. I figure that way if we ever hit a prolonged dry stretch I'll at least be a little ahead of the curve. :notsure:

Where I grew up the houses that were built the from 1900 through 1930's it was VERY common to have a cistern in the basement. They fell by the wayside and most people abandoned them in place. Not sure on your intent but it might be cheaper to bury a vessel in the yard below the frost line so you can utilize the basement space?
