What I believe is that the ’16 Toyota Taco truck is solid and well built.
I believe that the claim that the trans is low and is going to fail is pure B/S.
I believe that a few ppl like smitty who may or may not have real problems post hundreds of post complaining about their misfortune.
I mean really, it’s like a hundred post for each issue lmaoo!
You don’t read hundreds of post from the overwhelming majority telling you the truck runs great over and over again…Do you?
Get off your a$$ and fix the problem or get a better built truck!
And good luck with that btw.

I believe you have allowed yourself to be totally mislead and are stuck on stupid.

To reiterate, The truck is filled with the required ATF amount to work properly as designed, but the added capacity of the cooler may be higher than the requirement. Don’t confuse the two.

I believe that the claim that BECAUSE the trans is SLIGHTLY low it is going to fail is pure B/S.
I believe that there is a Drive engagement delay that is UNRELATED to the trans fluid level that hopefully will be worked out soon with some kind of TSB.

I've got about 400 miles on my truck so far and am having similar issues to most of you. I am dropping my truck off Friday to have it checked out on Saturday. Fingers crossed.

 

Can someone confirm the proper temps when checking the atf fluid level? I remeber seeing around 110F to 130F, but my dealership is telling me that is wrong. Direct from Toyota, the proper temp is around 195F??

They showed me the print out to confirm this.

 

Between 95 and 113. But, I've seen that there is an adapter kit that allows them to check at full operating temp (they set the height of the check tube specific to each vehicle); much depends upon if they used that kit or not.

 

Just had my truck at the dealership yesterday, had the hesitation from reverse to drive when it was cold told the dealer bout it and they checked my tranny fluid and it was 1&.25 quarts low

 

why wouldn't they put a dipstick, they're acting like american cars in that ballpark.

 

I have the Torque App and an OBDII dongle. I checked my fluid yesterday when Torque said the tranny temp. was between 115-130 deg F. About 1/2 quart came out of the overflow before it stopped. I doubt it was overfilled. But I also heard that a small trickle was normal. I guess I'm questioning the accuracy of the ODB2 dongle and app.

 

I have a 2017 TRD off road...six speed auto transmission. Took it in for the 5k fluids check. I had checked the rear end level and could not get any fluid on my finger. Tech checked it with a small screwdriver and said it was within the 1/4" distance from the filler hole. Actually it was 1/8" below the hole. Tech said Toyota does not want the techs to mess with the transmission fluid and there was no plug or anyway to check the level. If there were visible leaks, they would drop the tranny , repair the leak and refill by pumping in the required amount of ATF. I find it very difficult to believe there is no "fluid level" check point, hole, plug or whatever....I looked all over the tranny and could not find one.

There is a process...

 

Checking the ATF fluid on the AC60F (4x4 ) and AC60E (2 wheel drive) ATs is not that difficult but does require some time as the transmission has to be brought up to the proper temperature you have to cycle the transmission through a specific shift pattern. I have the Toyota service write up on the procedure. You need a couple sockets, a paper clip to jump the OBD, Toyota ATF fluid (mine was .75 qts low) and a drip pan. PM me and I’ll email the service write up.

I have the same truck and was in for my 10K service today. I asked if they checked it and was told "this won't be done until 30k mile service. There were a few trucks with this issue and it seems every single one of them wrote about it online."

 

thats BS....extra 20k miles could damage tyranny if low

 

Is there a secret password involved for getting your ATF cheeked? Two dealerships now told me they won't check it unless I do a drain and fill out of pocket. Truck is 2 weeks old.

I have escalated the issue with Toyota Corporate and a manager from there is supposed to call me back. Unless his name is Aladdin and he has a magic genie I don't think I'm going to get anywhere with that.

My only solace is in hammering the dealer in the post-delivery survey and google reviews, which I have every intention on doing if this isn't solved and fast.

 

You have to give specific problems that indicate low fluid. That’s how I got them to check it, otherwise they don’t want to spend all those hours to do the proper procedure.

 

Mentioned everything from delayed engagement to lurching when changing from P to D and P to R, harsh downshifts, sluggish upshifts. All I got was an ECU flash that barely changed anything.

I'm just getting boned. I'm not going away quietly though, promise you that much.
