Much rather spend closer to $20K than to $30K. In all reality I can have the compost delivered for 20 bucks too. Really questioning my need for a truck.

Never paid too-too much attention to them, but noticed on that Crosstrek, it had provisions in the lower valance for a hitch, ground clearance was pretty good too. Looking at specs online the mpg isn't too terrible...not the 40 I want, but close enough, given the utility I am looking for.

Now just need to buy a puffy THE North Face jacket, a trucker hat, pair of Ray•Bans, and grow a lumbersexual beard. :p (One just walked into my work....)

I tried to do this as well. IDGAF about the latest tech/gadget/gee whiz shit and wanted the simplest truck with the least fuckuppable parts on it as possible.

I've had people look at my truck and get really excited b/c it brings back memories of the old simple Toyo they had in high school or college. I've never liked super optioned rigs--the "Gentleman Jim" poo-say trucks. Give me something I can throw a rick of wood in, drive in the woods, drag someone out of a ditch with a chain, and not worry about washing. I'm getting wood just talking about it.

Yeah, but it’s not like the gadgets or techy bits ever give people trouble. I’ve not yet seen many complaints of auto climate control, sonar sensors, or the JBL stereo going out. Your truck is still wired up to a mega complex computer, engine’s been updated from the old 3RZ with variable timing among other “upgrades”, and has more in common with a new Limited Taco than the old Pickup. So let’s not kid ourselves into thinking we’ve got some horseless buggy tank from the old days. :)

Agreed. “Gentleman” and “gentlemanly”... those two words mean something totally different to me than what they mean to most people, and I’m not into it.

No one is kidding themselves. You’re just not understanding our perspective. We have opted for LESS, because to us less is better. Tons of electronic components go out, just because they haven’t shit the bed in the 3rd gen YET doesn’t mean they won’t. Limiting the amount of broken and inop peripheral “comfort” components is the idea. To me, they aren’t necessary, I won’t pay money for them, and it’s not what I consider a quality in a truck. There have been complaints about the moon roof, leaks, dirt getting into areas it shouldn’t. In my head, who the fuck puts a moonroof on a truck? Maybe in yours, with your lifestyle and your comfort level, that’s the bees knees, and that’s ok. You and I commonly don’t share the same perspective. That’s ok too. We are definitely not similar people, why would we agree on similar truck qualities.

In none of the Toyota trucks I’ve owned, I’ve never had the climate control go out. Even on my Landcruiser with 180k miles on it, going on 18 years. Heated seats still worked and worked well. Keyless entry, still going strong. Point is, your truck with “less” really boils down to what? A few interior options? A hole in the roof? That’s it. Complexities that lie under the hood are the same. That’s all I’m saying. I’m glad you think you’re living, and loving, the rustic life that is an SR(5). More power to you.

I do wish I could have gotten my truck without the moonroof, though. Never use the thing. But I’ve got it. Make fun of it all you want. Doesn’t bother me. But please don’t get butthurt because I said your MY2017 vehicle is anything but a simplistic machine. It’s not.

Who said anything about climate control? VVTI is mostly hydraulic, and the electronic side/ecu im not afraid of ever going out. I haven’t personally seen it. I have however seen power seats and windows, moon/sun roof functions etc drop right out. The only person who compared our trucks to a more rustic “horseless buggy” are you. Considering what I said above about you and I being different, what makes you think I would read your words and say “yeah, I don’t know why I’m so pumped on this. I should listen to THIS GUY. I’m just silly.”?

Climate control—You did state “tons of electronic components” and “comfort” components. That’s what you were referring to, right? I get it. You want an anvil-like simplistic machine. And like I’ve stated already, if they offered a new base model Hilux today, I’d seriously consider one.

I get the charm to such a vehicle. But the SR(5)’s and the rest of the upper trim have very little difference, if you look at it. Some exterior dress up kits. Few interior bits. That’s it. It just seemed silly to me that the two were being looked at like they were different models, and somehow, one was much more reliable than the other. Just not the case (please show me some proof, if that’s not the case). Yes, I understand there are some teething issues with the 3.5L. The 3RZ and the 2TR went through the same issues. Toyota will get it right.

Eh, you already have. Too many consenting voices here would be boring. Then we’d only have garbage threads like that K&N and tire size debates. You’re a d-bag, but a d-bag I’d probably chew the fat with around a camp fire. Like the rest of my d-bag friends.

Brings bak the hand crank! :D :p

Current SR has load of options compared to the old stuff, I don't consider it simple at all. I have had Toyotas with no AC, no power windows, carburetors, etc...also had a couple aircooled VW's only thing simpler would of been a horse and buggy, those had power nothing, and 255 air-conditioning...

...the old stuff was barbaric, these things are tools for making life more comfortable and easier. I don't mind some of it...EFI has done wonders. Some of it is over the top and unnecessary. My biggest complaint is because of "cutting the fat" stream lining on the production line we longer get to ala carte what we want. From a business owner stand point I understand that, and being a business owner I don't want to pay for stuff I don't need either. It is what it is.

But you would think in this day and age since these things are being mostly built by computers and robots, we could punch into an order form and order exactly what we want. Perhaps one day with 3D printing it will advance enough to make that possible.

I don't mind all the modern conveniences, but efficiency as been sacrificed because of the added weight of them, not to mention the ever expanding waist line of vehicles.

Have you considered importing one? You can get a really nice truck, even diesel powered one for around 10k https://www.japan-partner.com/ Im seriously considering getting an imported diesel land cruiser just for the hell of it. Ran into a guy with one this past summer and he said it wasn't all that hard to get it here, nor was it as expensive as he had thought.
