You can use a call sign to look up a person in the FCC website. How much info you get is another thing.

im just saying that while it is possible ive not heard of it being used to break into/steal vehicles. i have heard of people with build threads/going to car shows / meets getting followed home and broken into. Ive considered getting the amateur radio tag for the truck but this exact thing has me hesitant. I think its fear mongering and bullshit really but ce la vie. I have also considered the P O box but that another unnecessary expense. I think the real solution is to buy property vacation somewhere and have that registered as the licensee address.

I like where you are going, buy land up in the mountains in some remote location that is only really good for camping/off the grid living for the next century. That might be affordable.

i was thinking more of registering it at my grandfathers beach condo, not sure the rules of that other than if the fcc tried to contact me and i didnt get it in a timely manner it could cause an issue.

Technically speaking your address is where your home station is located. Years ago you were supposed to clarify when mobile or portable, meaning that you were not at home. You were supposed to log all your transmissions, too. That was so you could corroborate times, frequencies and power to know if the question came up.

Now a-days people are much more lax about it all. But it would be good to be able to receive correspondence within 30 days, which is a typical grace period the FCC gives for action in the event of interference or complaint. What I mean by that is let's say you have an antenna issue that causes someone (maybe a neighbor, a local fire or police dispatch, another ham, etc) problems and the FCC tells you have 30 days to correct it after which it becomes a legal matter (e.g. fines primarily).

The FCC won't care that you won't get the letter until next Christmas when they might come around knocking on the door in the flesh. The FCC allows P.O. Boxes, I presume because it's not difficult for them to trace one to a real address.

So some random dudes (unlicensed btw) are listening in on their cheap little baofeng, and writing down call signs as they are repeated every 10 minutes...then looking up FCC database on the call signs and proceeding to rob and pilfer the unsuspecting.
Better just shut this shit down now.

People have been able to monitor hams for a long time, just needed a scanner, which by the 1980s and 1990s were relatively cheap like the Baofengs are now. Honestly, there's much better ways to figure out where you live than trying to traverse the FCC ULS database. It's more likely someone will break into your car, get a garage door opener and your address from an insurance card or old mail in the front seat. Or just follow you home from King Soopers and watch for when you leave for work in the mornings.

and so listing your callsign on a public forum is not any more likely to lead to a break in than having a build thread or going to a car meet. Id still like to get a list of people whom i know with a callsign because i sure as hell dont recognize anyone when im monitoring a freq.

I don't have to be tech savvy to rent a car and follow you. Not saying I've ever done that or anything.

Any hoot, Congrats to the new guys that passed.

My baofeng/mobilinkd has hit repeaters regularly so I'm sure a solid radio would do better. Probably lose you at the bottom of a valley but the previous beacons should show you headed that way

This is what I was kinda thinking of doing. Add a little mag mount to my Baofeng when I wanted to try APRS.

I’ll be headed into Moab later this morning so I’ll be able to report back on the coverage there soon. I won’t be too far into the back country however. The coverage along I70 has been without interruption even in Glenwood Canyon.

You missed the Cisco exit to 128. It is a beautiful drive in and usually doesn't take any longer. I've actually found it is the same amount.

What App are most of you using for your tablet for running APRS and tracking. Will your tablet show locations on a map without any sort of WiFi/Cell data? Is APRS 2 way?
