Hello I have been visiting Tacoma world for a while now but never needed an account until now because I am stumped on what’s wrong with my taco. I have a 03 4x4 w diff lock with about 180k on it I’ve had it for the last 20k problem free until after a long trip about 2000 miles I get home and as I’m coasting into my neighborhood I hear a whining/ squeaking noise. It only really happens around 10-30 mph and mostly while coasting although you can sometimes slightly here it under load. It’s been going on for about 3000 miles and is worse sometimes than others usually after it’s been drivin a lot. I’m going to try and attach a video I took I also have a wierd noise when I put it in reverse sometimes which u can also hear in the video if you watch the whole thing. I know it’s not my u joints / differential because I’ve already had them looked at thanks guys any help would be so much appreciated.

Hoping a vid will help. Hard to nail down a bearing or u-joint w/o taking it apart. Mine 'looked' fine 'til I tore down the driveshaft and felt a 'notch'.
    That's not a whine though.

Yes whirling is more like it I’m not great with describing the sounds I guess.

I still think it could be a U-joint. Just at the beginning stages. If it is it'll get worse, but it could still last a while

Sounds like the most likely spot to start for me too. Take the drive shaft off and check. Sometimes even if you see grease coming out all 4 sides, 1 side of 1 side may go dry and wear. Wheel bearings if sat up a while may dry off on top, then notch out when pressed into a long service.

    She's 15 now.

I am almost positive u joints aren’t the cause I did exactly that with one of my family members who’s a retired mechanic and he assured me they have a lot of life left he just has trouble hearing the sound because well he’s gettin older and it seems like whenever I take it to him it barely makes the sound.(ofcourse) Normally he helps me with whatever goes on with my vehicles he just can’t seem to pin point this.

If you don't want to start taking things apart to find it, (I admit it's rough to chase a whoop sound unless you get some other symptom) just keep driving short distances (under 100 miles) it'll show it's face. Wheel, carrier, u joints don't usually just fail all of a sudden.

Edit: That sounds like a bearing of some sort.

Check for play in your wheel bearings. Put your truck on jack stands and grab each tire at 12 and 6 o’clock and push at 12 and pull from 6 o’clock. If there is play that’s the problem. Also check to see if your u-joints have play. Mine made a similar noise, ended up being the wheel bearings.

Sounds like the carrier bearing. Especially being more noticeable at low speeds and while coasting / no load. Mine would chirp when I let off the gas or when I got on it just for that moment when there was no load on the shaft in either direction. It would scream like a banshee if I went down a hill and gave it just enough pedal that the engine wasn't slowing me.

Anyway to check for the carrier bearing or is it if the wheels have any play like falkor said?

Grab the shaft near the bearing and shake it. It shouldn't move more than a quarter inch, if that. Frequently it is degradation of the rubber surrounding the actual metal bearing that causes the problem.

I put my neighbors truck up on jack stands, nose against a tree, and let it run all wheels up in the air to help pinpoint his rear end pinion once.
It had to get to a certain speed to make noise and I didn't trust the inertia of the wheels speeding up/slowing down not to knock it off the jacks.
Still made me nervous but with a 1/2 pipe to the rear and listening through it I could hear the grind. I'm sure there was a better way. Maybe tape phone around different places?

It echoed around too much on the road. I'm sure a few more thousand miles it would have made itself well known.
