Dear Taco Community - Currently own a 2001 Tacoma XCab SR5 4wd Automatic 2.7. Was raining when I hooked up my trailer today to pick up a rear tractor blade and run some errands. Last stopped at Giant and When I went to leave it started up nicely but the shift selector is now Locked in park and my Toyota is stuck at Giant .

What/where would be the first step to troubleshoot this problem? Is there any manual release that this 2001 Tacoma would have to unlock the Shift Selector? Thank you for taking the time to help this senior citizen. SP

There may be a small access panel on the shifter trim that you can pop open and push the button beneath it. That will most likely work.

First post, 07 TRD Sport SR5 Pre-runner Crew cab. Just had the same problem, was at Dealership for 12 days. Check fuse in engine compartment (IG 10AMP), This problem is from your trailor lights. You have a bad ground on one of your lights, the 12v current is traveling back through the harness and blowing the fuse. Fix your trailor lights, this should fix the problem for sure.

His is a 2001. It may not be the same problem as yours.

Like said above, should be a release button. And check your fuses. I have read and experienced this and saw this happened to a older 4runner also that a fuse blew locking the shifter in park. That would be were I would start.

One of my trailers had a short in the wiring and blew the tail light fuse on my 2002. It was locked in park like the OP's. Called the service shop and they told me about the slot iby the shifter. Replaced the fuse and fixed the wiring on the traile and was good to go.

    Ha...stuck in park...I drive stick.

But seriously, I believe it is the trailer light fuse as a couple people have said, but even if it isn't, the truck should have a shift lock release button. My family's Civic has one that requires the key to operate, so if it happened to that car I would use it to get the car into neutral (still starts in N) and then move to drive from there.

It is possible your "brake switch" is out. Try a couple of things. Rest your hand on top of the shift lever and depress the brake peda, you should feel slight twich in the lever or you could here the shift lever unlock. If you depress the pedal and don't hear anything most likely the switch is out.

the switch is located above the brake pedal, climb under and look upward along the metal of the brake pedal and you should see it. press in the pedal and listen for unclicking sound. No sound mean bad switch.

You could buy these at any autopart store. Hope this helps..

I have the shifter lock in park intermittently in my 2006 Tacoma V6 4WD. I know when it's going to happen when I turn the key on and the lights on both the ac button and the air intake button do not go on. the fan still works. What could be causing this?
