    I have found that the brand isn't as important as the disc selection. I highly recommend the diablo mesh pads.

    They are cheaper at Home Depot (about $1.50 a piece) and they live up to the packing promises. The only negative thing about them is if you sand a lot on the edge of the disc it will fray the mesh.

    Mesh backed sandpaper (on a disk or used freehand like when turning things on a lathe) is the best.

    However, for flat surfaces, i tend to use a card scraper or, smoothing plane, to handle most surface prep. I can usually go straight from the plane/scraper to 220/250 grit sandpaper for final finish prep.

    Been wondering about those. I recently replaced a busted 5 hole sander with a new 8 hole and saw these while searching for new sets of discs. Seemed kinda gimicky to me, so I got some regular paper pads. Maybe I'll consider the mesh after these papers get used up.

    I tried making a single yesterday but with the bent fence I cant get a straight cut. Its always got a taper on one end or the other. I will have to try a double. Its maybe 1/16th inch off in the fence and the miter moves about 1/16th in a blade width...which is a lot in a 36" run:frusty::goingcrazy:

    well that was a bust of an estate sale...just a bunch of old furniture and old rusty tools.

    I havent in a while. I watch a lot of Smaurai Carpenter, Andy Rawls, Wood Whisperer, and renaissance woodworker. but i think the best guy for learning (at least hand tools) is Paul Sellers.

    I need to thank you for your previous recommendation of Paul Sellers (at least I think it was you or maybe @wileyC). I've learned a lot from him plus he is a joy to watch. He has spurned an interest in me to use hand tools. I'm currently on the look out for a router plane because of him.

    I see the 71's come up on ebay for around $100. Some complete, some not. I'm going to an antique mall next weekend. Going to try my luck there.
