Really, hell I'm local if that's the case I'm in.

 

It's a bureaucratic nightmare to get it registered. It sat for a year with a dead battery so all the SMOG monitors are obviously unready. To transfer the title into my name I have to get it smogged, I would automatically fail if I don't get the SMOG monitors ready which requires driving a couple hundred miles. I already transferred liability into my name.

Now tell me, how the hell am I supposed to drive a car that's un-registred, uninsured, with liability in my name if I crash or some crashes into me?

I'm currently in limbo with that car. Sometimes I hate living in California.

 

Youre supposed to get a three day pass to drive, I had to for my truck in WA after I swapped it.

 

Wish it was that easy. Says on their website "California does not issue temporary license plates." Doug DeMuro of Autotrader actually did an article of how stupid and difficult California's temporary license plate process is.

The CA DMV offers:

• Vehicle Moving Permit
• Temporary Operating Permit (TOP)
• One Trip Permit
• Nonresident Commercial Trip Permit

The first one is what I thought I needed, but it's valid for one day only. I'm going to have to drive like HELL to get it SMOG ready.

 

Oh well then, yeah that state is fucked. The whole SMOG thing is too little too late anyway. Love to visit Cali but never living there again, anyway if everyone else plays dirty sounds like you'll have to as well, either drive unlicensed to set the monitors, or find a sketchy smog place. WA has been dismantling it's emissions regulations and checks because it was determined to be a huge waste of money and was stopping nothing haha. In AZ everyone just registers in a county that has no emissions checks. I'd just get the one trip permit if I was you and follow the process for setting each monitor.

 

That's the plan, I'm afraid if I drive the car any longer the CEL would come on for a dead hybrid battery.

The original owner told me he had a CEL for a dead hybrid battery, but I've never gotten it. I don't know why, I don't even know if it's even dead.

I don't even need the Hybrid, I just want it to pass SMOG. It makes it even more complicated that I got it as a gift.

Tell me about it. I love how Toyota had to manufacture two variations of the Tacoma: one "FOR CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS" and one for everything else. It says that on tons of FSM diagams.

 

Has anyone ever put chains on all 4 tires? I realize there’s a chance of clearance issues with the UCA and what not, but as anyone here actually personally done it?

 

yes. But i was on 31s at the time..

 

So you could probably do it with 255 too I’d assume.

 

Works great on a 83 toyota

 

I’d just be scared id slip one and say bye to my brake lines, CV and all that good stuff, cause that’s how much luck would go.

 

On a ifs no i would not. Due to fitiment and clearence like mentioned.
The 83 was no problem since they are straight axled. I was.taught one up on the out side link to keep tension, and flopping inside.

 

Ah I don’t know what years Toyota changed stuff or whatever.

I only ask as like a last line of defense. I think if a guy had front and rear lockers with chains itd be hard to stop him.

 

Idk, would depend on the wheels and the chains.

I did it on a 86 yota..was IFS. Was fine. Just can't be stupid.

 

I’m hoping 1st gen spares eventually and some lighter chains.
