Depends on what you're going for. A D60 is stronger in just about every way than a FJ axle, and a lot cheaper and easier to find too. If you want to do a low key swap and run 37's, the FJ axle would be fine and you could keep it all Toyota. If you want to run 40's or bigger, your best bet is to go with one ton axles.

With Chromo shafts you're good to 40s with the FJ axles but really, they're so purpose-built for the 80 series it isn't really worth messing with them on another platform.

Yeah I'd either be re-tubing the 60 to narrow it or re-tubing the FJ to get the diff in the right spot. If you're gonna bother with all that might as well go with a fabricated housing.

Original Tacoma: 6" lift, air bags in the rear, 17x9.5 XD Series rims w/ 35" Cooper STT Pro tires. Body Armor rear bumper with swing arm tire mount, TRD Exhaust, URD True Cold Air intake, TRD Front Brakes, RIGID INDUSTRIES grill and LED bar installed in it, LED Rear Lights, TracRack rack system, tool box. Sold the truck. Bought 2016 ram 2500 Laramie diesel. (7/2016) Picked up 97 Tacoma 4x4 Extended Cab 3.4L. Building motor now. (8/2017)
Finally had some time to get her set up. With the help of a few friends, and little liquid motivations, we got the truck dialed in.

It got dark after we got the tires and wheels on it, but we had to use old wheels and tires for alignment shop, so took a pic of it with new lift and old wheel/tire setup.

That is a very deep question my friend, The normal for me pre taco sas is a early 85- front end. But from 79-83 they didnt have a top and bottom gusset. 80-83 had a partial top if i remember right. The birfields were weak shit on 33s or larger, leading to the birfield eliminator shafts. Along with shooting for a turbo bell housing to mate a ?w56 and set up duals. The ifs box was plug and play for crossover steering, and the 4runner rear main leaf would bump you 2.5" fwd.

The width is narrower then taco and clearence issues come into play along with tq steering ect

Jeep wagoner with a d60 is money ahead, till now.

You should do some more research before you post on stuff ;) no stock toyota housings came with a top truss. 81-83 had a half bottom truss and 84-85 had a full bottom truss.

Birfields are plenty strong enough and way stronger than u joints And I don't think any companies make the birfield elminator kit because of that. Stock birfs hold up to 35s no problem on a tacoma and 3.4 and can probably do 37s if you stay off the skinny peddle. Rcvs fix that though and people run them up to 42s. (And the cheapest front chromoly shafts at 680 i believe for the set) Weak point becomes the 8 in diff but put a high pinion in and most worries go away.

Most companies sell an adapter to mate a pre tacoma tcase (duals) to the tacoma transmissions now making easier to do these swaps.

Ifs box is really the only option for sas besides ford f150(?) Foward swing boxes or land cruiser boxes or full hydro.

There are ways to match the width with smaller wheel spacers than what most people run to clear the ucas on a 3 in lift tacoma. (Ifs hubs with tacoma brakes get you almost to 60" with no wheel spacers as well)

And jeep wagoneers didn't come with Dana 60s they came with 44s. They are the stronger 44s with 1/2 in tubes and other things but no 60.

I did phsical research, cause the internet was not around then. Yes my bad on the gussets on the axle tubes and jeep crap. As far as the birfs, they never held up for us. Quick research led to documenting the "Birfield.Eliminator Kit" after I steped away from off roading by, 4wd Magazine in 2004.
    Screenshot_20180127-014243.jpg

Hydo steering was a big ticket and not avalible unless you were stripping a hyster forklift so was not seen as a d.d option.

Spacers were needed to have equal wheel base width depending on if had a pre 85 axle or wider 86 and up rears.

Marlin crawler, and Alacan ect were just getting a foot in the door last time i was around, skyjacker was established. The gear drive t case doubler was in development, and pre fj high pinion 3rd members were a dime a dozen.

By all means rant and rave, no skin off my back. I never claimed to write the bible.

Good to know that the bigger calipers fit. I have the SR5 3rd gen wheels. Gonna ditch my spacers today. I've come to realize they simply aren't needed when running a 265 70. I mainly hate how I can only go to one tire shop in town right now because of the spacers.

They're relatively heavy. I'd say 25-35 pounds estimated each. I'm just guessing off of how it felt when I carried it home. With a tire it's something like 55-65 pounds each.

Cheap spacers and blocks, 33's, poor man upgrades.
So I’m assuming those rims and a 285 tire would be a no go. Wanted to get closer to a 33 when I buy new tires.

The rims fit fine. It's your tires you have to worry about. The back spacing is lesser on these rims so the tires are closer to the body.

It'll work with wheel spacers and extensive trimming to the wheel liner area. I think the stock P265-70 tire size is the biggest without rubbing on stock suspension.

A lift kit will also play a factor

Right now I have spacers up front blocks in rear. All going bye bye soon. Was on 33s with no issues, pinch welds been hammered. Will be goIn either fox/icon/ADS up front. New leafs in rear. With those coils up front I’m hoping those rims and a 285 will be ok before I invest time and money and the setup rubs me and the truck in the wrong way.

Got the truck back from the 4.56 install last night, and did my first 15 mile break in on the new gears just now. After a cool down I’ll make another loop, and go find a dirt road to begin the process on the front.

They might fit fine if you have a lift kit on and the pinch weld area is modified.

That's very true, same reason the Taco sells well to this day haha. The little cooler built into the underside of the bed is a total gimmick but having constant beer storage is serious business, they need to market that feature better.
