Anyone know what caused this? Looks like someone held a torch to it. Should I be concerned?

Looks like there was a decal on it for some reason. Keep on driving!

That’s what I was thinking. Maybe factory didn’t remove th label when they built the truck and it just burnt off.

I should clarify that these are pits through the first layer of metal. It's not debris remaining on the surface. The outer layer of metal has melted and pulled away.

I’d have the dealer C/o at the next service. I think those have a fairly long warranty on them.

May be overworked, elevating temperatures. Basically getting fed more than it can eat.
They can get over 2,000* F if not working properly. I'd be concerned.
How many miles? Maybe pull a spark plug or two...

29K miles, 2016 TRD/OR. Everything seems normal except for a couple days last week there was a strong hydrogen sulfide smell in the garage after I pulled in. Wasn't the battery, it was fine. Haven't smelled it since then, mileage is normal, no warnings. I hate going to that dealer, but guess I'll have to take it in...grrr.

Yup....you've got a clogged cat. Take it to the dealer and get a new one for free

Did you ever have your crankshaft sensor replaced? Mine was doing the same thing in terms of the exhaust smell bc it was running rich - post replacement no odd smells. My cats run 1000-1550 F for normal driving with does seem a little high under WOT so u do wonder if the 10k miles I drive choking my exhaust has done long term damage but then again it’s part of emissions warranty and I have plenty of time left on that...

What running temps do others log on their catalytic converter(s)?

No idea what temperature the cat is running out, I don't have any way to tell that. I did have the crankshaft sensor replaced as part of the TSB. I'm dreading the usual exchange with the dealer, and even if they admit there's something wrong and replace the cat I doubt they'll bother trying to figure out what caused it. The right-hand cat is clearly damaged for some unknown reason, but the left-hand one is encased in a heat shield and I haven't looked at it. I'm 90% sure they'll replace the one they can see, won't bother checking the one they can't, and will call it good. Could be timing, plugs, bad O2 sensor...but I don't understand why I haven't had any warnings or cautions light up if any of those are wrong.

Do you idle for long periods or have a habit of running the tank to empty?

Nope, no extended idle time and I usually fill up around the 1/4 tank mark, sometimes slightly less but not empty.

Ok, now I'm wondering if I'm looking at catalytic converters at all. Heard that 3rd gen cats are located under the hood, against the engine block? If that's the case, what the heck am I looking at in the photo above? And what would have caused melting of that piece of exhaust. Very confused.

Our trucks have two sets of cats. The main set is near the engine and firewall. The second set is what we’re looking at (well part of it), which sits closer to the transmission.

Curious which PIDs / labels are given to the temps of all of the cats? I can easily see B1S1 and B2S1 but am not seeing 2 more sensors as I'd expect. I would expect to see the front cats running a good bit hotter than the rears.

simply a sticker / label that has burnt from the extreme temps of the cats running normally.
